M Cristina L Martins (CM) is Principal Investigator and Leader of the BioEngineered Surfaces Group at i3S/INEB (https://www.i3s.up.pt/research-group.php?groupid=106). She is Vice-Director of INEB and Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto. In 2020, she was named Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) by the International Union of Biomaterials Science and Engineering Societies (IUSBSE). CM got her PhD in Engineering Sciences at Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in 2003. Her PhD studies were performed at INEB and UWEB (University of Washington Engineered Biomaterials), Seattle, USA. Before starting her research career, she also worked in industry. CM is an expert in the development of biomaterial coatings designed at the nanoscale using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and biomedical polymers. Her group is investigating the effect of surface immobilized ligands (proteins/peptides, fatty acid like and glycosylated compounds) in the guiding of specific protein/cell binding to control bacterial infection (e.g., in gastric and skin infection or osteomyelitis prevention) and/or medical devices associated thrombus formation. CM published 115 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (h-index = 35 with 4310 citations (SCOPUS; Feb2025)) 1 book, 11 book chapters and 8 filled patents. She was the Principal Investigator of 8 financed projects (from 29) involving bioengineered strategies to fight infection and one, MOBILIsE, financed from European Commission (H2020) under the topic WIDESPREAD-06-2020 - ERA Chairs- MOBILIsE - ongoing). She supervised/co-supervised 10 PD, 16 PhD (3 ongoing) and 23 MSc (1 ongoing) students.
