Elsa F. Vieira is a Researcher at Rede de Química e Tecnologia (REQUIMTE) - Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde (LAQV),
being part of GRAQ - Chemical Reactions and Analysis Group, which is located at Polytechnic of Porto - School of Engineering
(ISEP.IPP). As a University of Porto alumni, her academic journey spans from a degree in Nutrition and Food Science (2007)
to an MSc in Quality Control by the Faculty of Pharmacy (2011) and a Ph.D. in Sustainable Chemistry by the University of Porto
and University of Lisbon (2016), awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (SFRH/BD/81845/2011). Her
PhD thesis was focused on the valorization of by-products from brewing and canned fish industry through the preparation of
hydrolysates with antihypertensive and antioxidant activities. Between May 2017 and April 2018, she was a post-Doc researcher
of the COMPETE project ICANSEA/PHD/2015/3171, focused on the formulation and characterization of canned fish products with
seaweeds. From November 2018 until 2019, she has a researcher position at REQUIMTE-LAQV and collaborated on the H2020-EU.3.2.5.
project SEAFOODTOMORROW (ID:773400), an ambitious initiative involving 35 partners from 19 countries aiming to valorize marine
resources. In 2019, she obtained a scientific employment contract (CEECIND/03988/2018), being developing a sustainable and
innovative approach to iodine supplementation combining seaweed resources and by-products from brewing industry. She has been
a research member of the projects 5537 DRI, Sérvia 2020/21 from the Portuguese-Serbia Bilateral Cooperation; PTDC/BII-BIO/5626/2020
- E2B2-PHACAR, SYSTEMIC (Ref. 696295); and Future Yämmi, funded by COMPETE 2020. In the frame of these projects, she has gained
experience in the development and characterization (by in vitro and in vivo models) of new nutraceuticals and food products
with interest in the prevention/ treatment of chronic diseases. Recently, she has gained expertise in the formulation of bioactive
films for food applications, being a research member of the national project CHESTFILM, funded by LA CAIXA foundation, in
the frame of PROMOVE (2022-24), focused on the valorization and transformation of chestnut residues into biodegradable and
bioactive films for food applications. Furthermore, she also joined the BLUE BIOECONOMY INNOVATION PACT, focusing on innovative
economic models based on the sustainable use of marine bioresources. In this project, she will collaborate with industries
to enhance marine products' nutritional and sensorial properties, supervising students to ensure hands-on experience and field
growth. Elsa F. Vieira has teaching experience of the subjects Human Dietary, Bromatology and Food Preparation Techniques,
under the integrated master’s in pharmacy sciences (Faculty pf Pharmacy, University of Porto) and Nutrition and Food Sciences
(Portuguese Catholic University of Porto). She has worked with over 30 collaborators, fostering global partnerships with research
groups and institutions. These collaborations resulted in over 40 papers in international peer reviewed (ISI) journals, most
in Q1 (Scopus), 4 book chapters and more than 45 conference presentations. Her work has been highly cited (>1500), h-index
= 20, from which 3 publications were cited >100 times (Scopus) and she is an inventor of 2 patents (WO 2012069889 A1, PT 106520-B).
So far, she has been supervised/co-supervised 2 PhD students, 10 MSc students (18 completed), 6 Erasmus students, and 4 LSc/BSc
students, as well as mentor in short-term missions of 2 post-Doc researchers and 1 PhD student. Recently, she served as an
expert evaluator for the Regular FONDECYT- projects competition, University of Chile. She has also participated in outreach
activities of CIÊNCIA VIVA program as supervisor of young students and as lecturer of the discipline Industrial Processes
and Laboratory Control at Polytechnic of Porto - School of Engineering.
