I have a PhD in Health Sciences and a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering with a specialization in Medical Informatics. During my masters’ dissertation at University of Minho, I worked in medical imaging and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction, specifically in the 3D reconstruction of bone structures from planar radiography images. During this period, I did an oral presentation at the 6th International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence (Salamanca, Spain), which resulted in the publication of a conference paper entitled “3D Reconstruction of Bone Structures Based on Planar radiography”. My master’s degree work was continued through a 9 months’ internship at a startup (PeekMed) whose main goal is to develop a software to help physicians in pre-operative planning of orthopedic surgeries. With this, I developed my expertise in computer vision and image processing. After this internship, I moved to the neurosciences field and started my research career. First, I started working as a research technician in the project “Pharmacogenetics study of the answer to treatment in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)” (an international collaboration between University of Minho, Portugal and Fundación Publica Galega de Medicina Xenómica, Santiago de Compostela, Spain). My main activity was the analysis of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data, including the preprocessing steps and statistical analysis. Also, alongside with this job I was also participating in other projects with researchers from the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS, University of Minho, Portugal) by doing fMRI analysis. Then, I started my PhD project at ICVS, which was focused in finding MRI biomarkers of cognitive preservation and decline in healthy aging. I developed my skills in neurosciences, statistics, research methodologies and machine learning by attending post-graduate courses. With my PhD project, I started analyzing different types of MRI acquisitions, like diffusion weighted imaging and structural data, which gave me the expertise to analyze different kinds of MRI data. I also developed new analytical tools (involving data science and machine learning skills) which helped reveal new insights about brain's connectivity and which are published in international peer-reviewed journals (Human Brain Mapping, Scientific Reports, Journal of Neuroscience Research). During my PhD, I also collaborated in other neuroimaging projects from ICVS, which resulted in 11 publications, and I also contributed in teaching activities for the Integrated Masters in Biomedical Engineering and Medicine and in postgraduate courses for the PhD and Masters in Health Sciences. Furthermore, I also participated in pop-science activities. In November 2021, I successfully defended my PhD thesis, with the classification of Muito Bom. Currently, I am collaborating as a researcher with Centro Clínico Académico – Braga and ICVS and my current lines of research focus on the use of new neuroimaging tools to discover new brain biomarkers of cognitive decline that could help promote healthier cognitive ageing.
