I am an evolutionary biologist aiming to understand the genetic basis of the evolution of species and populations. I have focused my research on the adaptive immune diversity (MHC system), which plays a crucial role in disease resistance. I have used different model species (birds, cartilaginous and bony fishes) and state-of-the-art molecular technologies to detangle the evolutionary mechanisms at the origin and in the maintenance of the extraordinarily high level of polymorphism exhibited by the MHC genes.
