Luís António Balreira Novo is a Challenge Research Fellow at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) in Edinburgh, UK. He holds a Ph.D. in Terrestrial Ecosystems (University of Vigo, Spain, 2013 - including a 1-year research stay at ETH Zurich, Switzerland). After concluding his doctoral studies, he spent one year at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), carrying out postdoctoral research on phytomining. Then, he undertook a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Aveiro also focused on phytomining and phytoremediation, until obtaining a permanent position in 2019. Between 2019-2020, Dr. Luís Novo was the Phytotechnologies Laboratory at the Department of Geosciences of the University of Aveiro, and a Researcher at the GeoBioTec, GeoBioSciences, GeoTechnologies and GeoEngineering Center. He is also guest faculty member at the State University of Maranhão in Brazil and was a visiting researcher at the Ecological and Forestry Applications Research Centre, Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain) in 2018. Dr. Luís Novo has published over 20 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 7 book chapters, and numerous conference papers. He serves in the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Phytoremediation and is a Topical Collection Editor for the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Dr Luís Novo is also an Ad-Hoc Reviewer for over 50 international journals. In 2019, he was the recipient of 2 Web of Science Group/Publons Awards for top 1% reviewer in "Environment and Ecology" and "Cross-Field". Dr. Luís Novo has been actively involved in several national and international projects in all capacities. He is also committed to teaching and mentoring, having supervised 1 PhD thesis, 3 MSc dissertations, and several Honours projects. The research of Dr. Luís Novo is centered on phytomining/agromining, phytoremediation of metal polluted soils, plant metal hyperaccumulation, plant-based strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation, and ecosystem services.
