Dr. Colin McVey completed his Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry in 1991 at the Queen's University in Belfast. He obtained his master’s in clinical laboratory medicine in the Dept of Haematology, from the same university in 1992, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of York in 2000. He has worked as a Research Assistant, Postdoc and Auxiliary Researcher at various academic institutions in the UK and Portugal. Since 2014, he has been a Principal Investigator (Research) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica. Dr. Colin McVey's research interests are in Biological Sciences with an emphasis on Biophysics, related to the fields of Virology and DNA binding proteins. In his professional activities, he has interacted with 132 collaborator(s) in co-authorship of scientific papers. He has published in high-impact journals and 4 book chapters. His scientific output has focussed on Structural Biology, in the areas of protein crystallization, and DNA viruses, particularly in the area of herpesvirus biology. His current focus is on the multifaceted latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA) and its role in viral latency, DNA binding mechanism and chromatin modulation.

2022/05/26 The subtle connection between a tumor virus and leukemia - ITQB NOVA researcher's study unravels how herpes oncoviruses are linked with a leukemia related-protein. Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is one of seven currently known human cancer viruses, or oncoviruses, and a leading cause of malignancy in AIDS. KSHV establishes persistent, lifelong infection of its human host and persists latently in tumour cells. In a new study, researchers revealed how virus latency is linked to the Mixed-lineage leukaemia 1 protein. https://www.itqb.unl.pt/news/kshv-imunocompromised
2013/11/18 Interview and newspaper article revealing the structure determination of the DNA binding domain of the LANA protein. Article also highlights the link between KSHV infection and HIV AIDS for public outreach purposes. It highlights how Kaposi¿s sarcoma went from a rare skin cancer, appearing in older men, and affecting certain parts of the globe, to a disease more spread when AIDS emerged. It also highlighted the importance of the viral LANA protein and how the structure was solved by the X-ray crystallography technique. Publico newspaper
