António Portugal is an Associate Professor at DEQ-UC. He graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1976 and, after one year of teaching in the UC, went to the University of Aston in Birmingham (UK) where he obtained the degrees of MSc and PhD respectively in 1978 and 1983. As a researcher, in the initial stages of his career, he worked in the field of simulation of chemical processes and energetic materials. Later, after the year 2000, he became involved in the field of energy, namely pyrolysis and gasification of biomass and biodiesel production from oils and glycerol transformation. More recently, he has been cooperating with Luísa Durães in the area of gels synthesis by sol-gel. He has successfully supervised 9 PhD theses, 10 MSc thesis and over one hundred of final year students’ dissertations in Chemical Engineering, since 1990, and was/is involved in about 15 research projects, being the principal researcher of 6 of them. He also has more than 80 published papers in international journals and about 100 papers in conference proceedings. He has been involved in management/administrative duties both at the Faculty and Department level. He was vice-director of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the UC in 2011, Head of Department of Chemical Engineering twice and Director of CIEPQPF research centre. At the moment he is responsible for the Doctoral programs in Chemical Engineering and in Biorefineries (DEQ/UC).
