José Luis Costa carried out his undergraduate studies at the University of Porto in Portugal (1998) and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Biology at Uppsala University in Sweden (2004). Prior to joining the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP) in 2006, he carried out postdoctoral research at the Vrije University Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 2014, he was appointed as Affiliated Professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Porto. Currently he is a Principal Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto and Scientific Coordinator of the Genomics Platform of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, Porto. During his academic and scientific career, he has published 35 papers in international peer reviewed journals with a corresponding H-index of 19. He has been able to attract competitive funding and was awarded with three prizes, one from the prestigious Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, another from the Portuguese Society of Oncology and in 2018 the Pfizer award for Clinical Research. He has supervised several Master students both in Amsterdam and Porto. He is currently the supervisor of two PhD students and co-supervisor of two PhD students. He is enrolled in several International Societies, most importantly was founding member of the International Society of Liquid Biopsy and European Liquid Biopsy Society. Scientifically his career has focused on understanding the crucial events that are the basis for the development and progression of cancer. To develop his work, he uses diverse genomic techniques, ranging from basic molecular biology tools to high-throughput technologies. Currently, he aims to deepen his translational research in order to be able to contribute with his knowledge of genomics for the benefit of patients through the application of the latest technologies in the diagnosis and the search for personalized therapy.
