Luís Melo (LM) graduated in Biology by the Faculty of Sciences from the University of Porto in 2008. One year later he obtained a master's degree in biology by the same Institution. In 2010 he moved to the Centre of Biological Engineering (Braga) to start his PhD in Biomedical Engineering. During this time, he did internships at Laval University (Canada), Guelph University (Canada) and Bonn University (Germany). After concluding his PhD (September, 2014), his research work was funded by a German company (Lisando SA). In 2015, he became a post-doc at CEB, where he worked until October 2024. Currently he is an Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra and he still is doing research at CEB. LM published over 60 peer-reviewed papers in international journals with an accumulated impact factor of over 170, over 2220 citations and H-index of 24. Some of his first-author papers were published in high-end specialty journals in the field of Microbiology and/or Virology, namely FEMS Microbiology Ecology (1), Scientific Reports (1), Frontiers in Microbiology (1), Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology (1), Current Opinion in Microbiology (2) and Critical Reviews in Microbiology (1). Furthermore, he is the corresponding author of 16 of them and senior author of eight papers. LM published 12 book chapters, three of which as the corresponding author. He was also involved on 29 oral communications (seven invited) and 38 poster and paper communications in international congresses. He is a member of the Bacteriophage Biotechnology Group (www.ceb.uminho.pt/bbig/), being involved in several current projects. To date, he successfully completed the supervision of 3 Postdoc, 2 PhD students, 11 Master Students and 1 Bachelor Student. Currently he is supervising 4 PhD students and 2 MSc Students. He is the PI of the Project Helicophage (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029182 - budget above 235 000,00€) and DeathTrigger (PTDC/BIA-MIC/2312/2020 - budget above 237 000,00€). He was part of the research team of 10 projects. LM reviews manuscripts for several Q1 journals and in addition he is an Editorial Board Member of the Antibiotics Journal (www.mdpi.com/journal/antibiotics/editors) and Frontiers in Microbiology. Current LM pedagogic profile includes Microbiology and Bacteriology classes. Moreover, at UMinho LM was involved in different classes of the Integrated masters in Biomedical Engineering, masters in Biotechnology and master in Bioinformatics course. LM was a member of the organizing committee of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th International Hands-on-Phage Biotechnology Course and in the organization of the Viruses of Microbes 2022 conference (www.vom2022.org/) and iVoM webinar events series (https://ivom.phage.directory/). In addition, LM is a member of several Associations, namely ANICT (www.anict.pt), Portuguese Microbiology Society and ESCMID. Also, LM is the Elected Representative member of the doctorate researchers integrated in the Centre of Biological Engineering invited to collaborate in the teaching of curricular units of the Department and the Elected Representative of the non-tenure track Professors and Researchers on the Scientific Council of the School of Engineering of University of Minho.
