Jose M. Escribano got his BA in History at the University of Alcalá (2008) and his PhD in History and Civilization at the European University Institute (2016). Nowadays, he is Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at Universidad Pablo de Olavide and has obtained the habilitation as PhD assistant lecturer and PhD lecturer by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain. Prior to that, he was Teaching Fellow in Early Modern Global History at the University of Warwick (top 10 in the rankings of UK universities, 4-7 History) where he was nominated for the Brilliant Newcomer Award. His main field of enquiry is the social and political history of the early modern world. More specifically, he has focused on the construction of the Spanish Empire in its different frontiers during the sixteenth century. In the last years, he has been working on how cross-cultural interactions shaped the politics and frontier societies of this polity. He is currently working on the mechanisms of violence restraint in the global frontiers of the Iberian Empires. His publication record includes more than 20 publications (3 books, 12 book chapters and 5 journal articles). Some of them have been published in top national and international journals such as Itinerario: Journal of Imperial and Global Interactions or Historia Social. His first monograph El coste de la defensa (2015) on the construction of the frontier in sixteenth century Navarre got very positive reviews in national and international journals. His new book Juan Rena and the Frontiers of Spanish Empire 1500-1540 (2020, Routledge, 3rd position in the CSIC Scholarly Publishers Indicator ranking) offers an actor-based account on how the Spanish Empire was built from below. Since 2013 he has been book reviewer for the European Review of History (IF 0.14, Q2 scimago). He has presented his research in 30 scientific meetings, including well-established international seminars and conferences in Canada, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, France, and United Kingdom. He has had research secondments at prestigious institutions such as the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris, 01-04/2014), the European University Institute (Florence, 06-09/2017), and CHAM Portuguese Centre for Global History (Lisbon, 06-09/2019). His teaching experience (43 ECTS), acquired in Spain and United Kingdom, focuses on Early Modern History and Historical Research. He has taught undergraduate modules such as “Early Modern History”, “The Hispanic Monarchy, the First Global Empire”, “Colonial Empires and their Legacies”, “Galleons and Caravans: Global Connections 1300-1800”, and “The Historian’s Toolkit”. He also teaches “Basic Tools for Research in History and Humanities” in UPO’s MA program on “History and Digital Humanities”. He has supervised 6 BA thesis and 1 MA thesis. In line with his commitment with the teaching innovation, he has attended to different courses, (such as the “Preparing to Teach in Higher Education” and “Teacher Training Certificate”) organised by internationally renowned institutions like the London School of Economics, the European University Institute, and the University of Warwick. In addition, he has participated in an award-winning project on “Renovation of Teaching Practices in Humanities and Social Sciences” (Universidad de Alcalá). He has also actively engaged in scientific outreach participating in different activities to communicate historical knowledge to the wider public.
