I am currently a Coordinator Professor at Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa and a Senior Scientist at the Health and Technology Research Center(H&TRC), Immuno-Biology & Immuno-Oncology laboratory at Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM). My major research interest is to understand how regulation of gene expression can contribute to various types of cell responses, including differentiation, recognition, intracellular localization. I have gained knowledge in the fields of molecular biology, cellular biology and biochemistry, which was translated into the study of molecular basis of diseases, dissection of intracellular transport mechanisms and more recently, in the immunology field, having acquired large experience in the study of gene expression regulation of T lymphocyte recognition and differentiation. The degree in Biochemistry - at Faculdade de Ciências, University of Lisbon - and the PhD in Biomedical Sciences - at Imperial College, University of London - provided the background for my scientific activity, initially focused on the molecular regulation of intracellular trafficking. I have then explored, during my two post-docs, regulatory splicing mechanisms and cell surface molecular recognition, moving into the field of Immunology at iMM - Silva-Santos lab. Within this group, I headed a sub-team dedicated to the study the epigenetic and post-transcriptional, microRNA-mediated, regulation of T cell differentiation towards IFN-g and IL-17 producing subsets, major players in the innate response against intracellular pathogens (and tumors) or bacteria and fungi, respectively. This work allowed the identification of epigenetic marks and of the first miRNA (mir-146a) governing gd T cell plasticity. My current research work is based on microRNA-mediated regulation in the context of T cell differentiation (at iMM) and also in the context of fetal hemoglobin regulation (at H&TRC). I have also contributed, with my molecular biology tools knowledge, to several projects in the field of environmental sciences, namely through qPCR quantifications in different environmental settings. At the academic level, I have started my career as an Assistant Professor at University of Madeira (UMA) from 2004 to 2007, where I implemented Cell and Molecular Biology classes for the first degree years of Medicine in collaboration with the FMUL. In 2008 I became an Assistant Teacher at Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa, where I am currently responsible for one subject of the degree of Laboratory Biomedical Sciences and one subject of the degree of Dietetics and Nutrition, while lecturing four additional subjects. I have assumed several institutional positions, including the direction of the first cycle of medicine at UMA, the vice-presidency of the Ethics council at ESTeSL, the vice-presidency of my current department DCEVSH at ESTeSL, the membership of the scientific council of UMA and ESTeSL. Overall, my scientific and teaching activities resulted in a total of 67 peer reviewed papers, with around 2200 citations. I have also published five book chapters and edited a scientific book, presenting about 120 communications in international and national events, a selection of which is included in this cv. I have co-supervised two post-docs, three PhD students and eleven master students, having participated in several academic juries. I have also participated either as a PI or as a team member in a total of 20 projects.
