Joaquim Luís Bernardes Martins de Faria (Ph.D Chemistry – 1993) is currently Associate Professor in Universidade do Porto
Faculdade de Engenharia (FEUP), elected Board Member of the Department of Chemical Engineering, member of the Scientific Committee
of the MSc in Chemical Engineering and member of the Scientific Council of the Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM. His work focuses
on catalysis and catalysed reactions, with thermal and photo-activation for environmental applications, energy and fine chemical
synthesis. Published over 160 articles (h index of 52, over 6 000 citations, Scopus), acted as supervisor of PhD students,
Post-Doctoral fellows, in addition to several MSc students.
Primary Area of scientific activity centred on Physical Chemistry, especially in the characterisation of the relations structure/reactivity
of molecules or complex chemical systems, using spectroscopic methods and techniques. Most of the recent studies are focused
on the kinetics of formation and disappearance of short-lived intermediates and their participation in oxidation and reduction
reactions in liquid medium. Catalysis and catalysed reactions. Development of heterogeneous catalysts for liquid phase reactions.
Photochemistry and photocatalysis: photochemically assisted generation, storage and transfer of energy; studies involving
catalysts based on semiconductors with photocatalytic capability; photocatalytic synthesis; solar fuels. Characterisation
of materials by spectroscopic techniques. Electron and energy transfer processes at the interfaces.
