I am an Associate Professor at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (Ciências ULisboa) and a senior researcher at LASIGE. Always focused on AI, I completed the BSc and MSc in Informatics at Ciências ULisboa. I worked in different research institutions, applying machine learning in multidisciplinary projects of diverse fields like remote sensing and bioinformatics, until I took a strong interest in evolutionary computation, particularly genetic programming, and enrolled in a PhD at the University of Coimbra. Upon PhD completion (2008), I took a 5-year research position at INESC-ID and then moved back to Ciências as a Principal Investigator funded by FCT. For the first 5 years, I worked at the BioISI research unit while also teaching AI at NOVA IMS - International Management School. In 2019, I became an integrated member of LASIGE, still funded by FCT, with a new work plan focused on evolutionary machine learning applied to forest monitoring through satellite imagery. In 2023, I became an Associate Professor. My current research interests are mainly on meta-learning issues of data preprocessing and feature construction, manipulation of feature spaces, interpretability, reliability and robustness of the induced models. I am highly recognized in the evolutionary computation community: I received the EvoStar Award for Outstanding Contribution to Evolutionary Computation in Europe (2018) by SPECIES - Society for the Promotion of Evolutionary Computation in Europe and its Surroundings; I was General Chair of the largest conference of the field, GECCO - Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (2023); I am an elected member of the executive boards of both SPECIES and ACM SIGEVO. I am the author of the free open software GPLAB, the first and still most complete MATLAB toolbox for genetic programming.
