I am a Human-Animal Studies (HAS) scholar currently developing research at the intersection with Disaster Studies. In 2022 I was awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant to study how animals recover from disasters, in particular wildfires. The ERC project ABIDE: Animal Abidings: recovering from Disasters in more-than-human communities, will run between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2028, at ICS-ULisboa. My approach is interdisciplinary and cross-thematic, and I am particularly interested in understanding whether human-animal practices contribute to the construction of a more equal and cooperative relationship with other species, challenging inter-species barriers. I am interested in a more-than-human approach in which all living beings are considered as equivalent partners in the co-construction of the shared worlds they inhabit. In 2016, I joined ICS-ULisboa, where I created and currently coordinate the Human-Animal Studies Hub, with the goal of developing and consolidating the HAS field in Portugal. Related activities include: coordination of 2 funded research projects; creation and coordination of an International Summer School in Human Animal Studies (since 2019, second edition in 2021); creation and coordination of a Postgraduate Course on Animals and Society (third edition upcoming in 2024); creation of all the strategy of communication and outreach of the HAS area and Hub (social media, other media, conferences, etc.); organization of seminars and conferences; coordination of a Reading Group on Human-Animal Studies, Animal Wonder; publications; supervision of PhD students and visiting post-doctoral researchers; lectures as an invited professor; presence in the mass media. From 2013 to 2019, I developed a post-doctoral project called Friends will be friends? Personal communities and the role of friendship in times of uncertainty (BPD 85809 2012), at ICS-ULisboa, and the Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Lives, of the University of Manchester, where I was a visiting researcher for several months in 2013 and 2015. I was also a Visiting Researcher for 1 month at the European Agency EUROFOUND, Dublin (2017), working with the team of the EQLS (European Survey of Quality of Life). I am currently a member of 2 research groups at ICS-ULisboa: LIFE - Life Course and Inequalities, where I explore the many-fold intersections of personal life and non-human animals; and ATS - Environment, Territory and Society, where I explore my research on animals, nature and climate change. Before joining ICS in 2016, I was an Invited Professor at the Catholic University of Portugal, where I lectured Research Methods and Techniques for the Social Sciences and Media Studies. Between 2013 and 2016, I was the Managing Director of CESOP - Research Centre for Quantitative Surveys, Polls and Public Opinion. While a Professor at UCP, I held several other management and scientific positions. From 2014 to 2015, I was an Invited Visiting Professor at the University of Saint Joseph (Macau, China), where I lectured Theories of Mass Communication.
