Juliana Roda Almeida have completed the graduation in Biochemistry in 2015, and the master’s in biotechnology in 2017, both by NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA), in Lisbon. Currently, she is a PhD student at the Biochemical Engineering (BIOENG) group, at FCT NOVA, attending the doctoral program of Chemistry and Biological Engineering. Her research focuses on sustainable bioprocesses, particularly on developing photosynthetic systems to produce biodegradable plastics through waste valorisation. She have developed her work throughout her participation as a research fellow in two Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program projects. The first project, INCOVER, concluded in 2019, aimed to produce bioplastics using photosynthetic bacterial cultures to treat organic residues, such as domestic and agro-industrial wastewater. The second project, USABLE Packaging, which started in 2019, explores the potential of bioplastics production using anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria through CO2 fixation. Currently, she continue to study photosynthetic bacteria in her PhD thesis. Her work has resulted in two published journal articles, 5 oral presentations (2 as a speaker) and 11 poster presentations. Additionally, she also have supervised the laboratory work of six undergraduate students and one master's student.
