Manuel Magalhães-Sant'Ana is a European Veterinary Specialist in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law. From the University of Porto, Portugal, he received his DVM (2001), his MSc in bioethics (2008) and his PhD in veterinary ethics education (2014). Manuel has been devoted to teaching and research in animal welfare and veterinary professional ethics for the last two decades, at both national and European levels. He was part of the FVE/EAEVE working group to develop a core curriculum in animal welfare in European veterinary education (2012-13). Under the Newman Fellowship in Veterinary Ethics at School of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin (2014-2016), he has explored the ethical challenges faced by veterinary professionals in Ireland, thus ensuring that governance was fit for purpose. Under the European project ANICARE - Educate Animal Welfare as a Farming Opportunity (2017-2020), he developed freely available educational tools in farm animal welfare to encourage critical, ethical, and creative thinking to educators and farmers. He was Vice-President of the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Veterinary Order (2016-2024) and an external expert for the World Animal Protection Global Animal Network. He was the recipient of the FCT-funded project VETHICS-2022 - A structured approach to describing and addressing the ethical challenges of the veterinary profession in Portugal (Portuguese Veterinary Order - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, Portugal). He has dealt with the complex issue of alternative therapies, namely Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and is engaged with evidence-based veterinary medicine and science communication for vets and the general public. He is currently PI of the research project EVIEDVET - Promoting education and training for evidence-based veterinary medicine (2021-2024). He has over 80 verified reviews at Publons.

2020/01/31 - 2020/01/31 Workshop on ruminant welfare introducing the ANICARE approach to animal welfare education to a mixed audience of +60 farmers, animal keepers, zoo-technicians, veterinarians and students. Participants were split into groups, and invited to assess different husbandry practices involving goats, sheep and dairy cows, such as bedding, feeding, disbudding, castration and lambing. Videos of both farmers and experts were used to trigger debate and explore participants' views of animal welfare. The workshop ended with a wrap-up session with main conclusions.
