Ricardo Ramalho (RR) graduated in Geology from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) in 2001 and completed his MSc on Dynamic Geology from the same university in 2004. Alongside his MSc, RR has worked as a postgraduate research assistant at Madeira University, on a project to study the volcano-stratigraphy of the island. After a brief period in industry, he then completed his PhD in Geology from the University of Bristol (UK) in 2010, with his thesis winning the Springer Thesis Award in 2011. After working as a Postdoc at Münster University in Germany (2011-13), RR was awarded a Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship (€270k) to work at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University in USA (2013-15), followed by a return period at Bristol (2015-16). He was then awarded a FCT Investigador fellowship hosted at Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL), where he worked for 5 years (2016-21) before becoming a lecturer at Cardiff University (UK), retaining the status of collaborator at IDL (Portugal) and adjunct scientist at LDEO (USA). As an academic, RR's research focuses on the geodynamics and hazards of ocean island volcanoes. RR's central aim is to understand how island volcanoes grow and decay, at different time and spatial scales, and how that evolution reflects the holistic interaction between surface processes and deep earth mechanisms, shaping island landscapes. RR's research also increasingly considers the hazard potential posed by island volcanoes, particularly in what concerns volcanic eruptions, landslides and tsunamis. Through his collaborative research with biologists and palaeontologists, he also looks at geological/biological co-evolution, combining the analysis of the fossil record with numerical modelling. With a well-established international reputation, RR has published over 65 international peer-reviewed publications since his PhD in 2010, attaining a h-index of 23, with an average of 25 citations per document and 95 citations per year. He his the author of several papers in high-impact journals such as Nature, Science Advances, Nature Geoscience, PNAS, and Earth-Science Reviews, many of which attracted worldwide media attention, with the second being in the top 5% of over 4 million articles ever tracked by Altmetric. RR also co-edited a Special Issue in Frontiers of Earth Science, he co-chaired several sessions at international conferences (e.g. EGU, AGU, IAVCEI), and he is a regular reviewer for several Q1 international peer-reviewed journals (e.g. JVGR, Geomorphology, EPSL, etc). RR is also a long-time Fellow of the Geological Society of London, and a member of EGU, AGU and IAVCEI. In terms of grant income, RR was also able to secure (or help to secure) over a €1M at the highest national and international competitive levels, including his Marie Curie and FCT Investigador Fellowships, 2 FCT standard grants as PI (MEGAWAVE and UNTIeD), 1 FCT standard grant as co-PI (HAZARDOUS), and 4 others as task leader (PLATMAR, FIRE, SIGHT, GEMMA), as well as several DFG (Germany) and NERC (UK) grants as co-PI and co-I. In 2019 he was also co-chief scientist of a large research cruise (METEOR M155). In terms of leadership roles, from 2019 to 2021, RR was Coordinator of IDL's Research Group 3 focused on "Solid Earth Dynamics, Hazards and Resources", as well as a member of IDL's Executive Board. He was also a key member of the task force that wrote IDL's application to the 2018 R&D Unit Evaluation by FCT, yielding a classification of Excellent. As an educator, RR has been module leader and contributor to several undergraduate and postgraduate units at FCUL, Bristol and Cardiff Universities. He is also an invited lecturer a contributor to several Doctoral Training Programmes (e.g EARTHSYSTEMS) and Summer Schools (e.g. at IDL and the University of Azores). Currently, he is also supervising/co-supervising 1 postdocs and 2 PhD students, as well as several MSc students.
