Gonçalo Brites graduated in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the University of Coimbra (2016). He has more than 9 years of national and international professional experience in the pharmaceutical, biomedicine, and healthcare fields, in both academia and start-up company, allowing him to develop an advanced and extended array of scientific-technical skills alongside leadership, educational and personal knowledge. Gonçalo is concluding his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, with a specialization in Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra (FFUC). He is currently working for the UC spin off company Toxfinder Lda. in the field of dermatology, toxicology and immunology, aiming at the development of novel non-animal alternative approaches for skin sensitization and development of a new medical device/cosmetics for prevention of allergic contact dermatitis which include in chemico, in vitro and in vivo studies and resulted in a patent application and a collaboration with a pharmaceutical company to manufacture the final product. During his Ph.D., Gonçalo also worked closely and in collaboration with Cosmetics Europe, the European trade association for the cosmetics and personal care industry that include members of cosmetics and personal care manufacturers, and associations representing our industry at national level, right across Europe, including (L’Oréal, Procter and Gamble Shisheido among others). Previously, Gonçalo worked at Biophysics Unit in the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Coimbra (2013-2018). At FMUC, for 5 years, Gonçalo was trained by Professor Filomena Botelho and developed research work from cells and 3-D models to mouse animal models, including drug delivery and pharmacokinetics. Actively involved in translational research projects and publishing high-impact research papers, alongside the medical community. Strong collaborative scientific partnerships with KOLs and TAEs (dermatologists, gynaecologists, pulmonologists, surgeons, dentists, urologists, nuclear medicine physicians, gastroenterologists and pathologists). Engaging discussions in the Oncology field with HCPs and stakeholders, collecting external insights on current medical practice and newly emerging therapeutic approaches. In 2015, Gonçalo was awarded by Liga Portuguesa contra o Cancro LPCC/ANA (rare and pediatric cancers) to extend his master thesis studies focused in discovery new approaches for osteosarcoma. In 2019, Gonçalo was awarded by the EIT Health with Ph.D. Translational Fellowship, by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Health, an international healthcare initiative funded by the European Union and went to University of Oxford to attend to an advanced course in Biodesign and acquired strong entrepreneurship skills. In 2022, Gonçalo was invited speaker at European society of contact dermatitis Congress (ESCD) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands where he was awarded one of the best abstract from a jury of global industry leaders and specialists in contact dermatitis and immunodermatology field. Throughout his scientific path, he published more than 17 papers in SCI indexed journals (2 in preparation) , 23 oral communications and 21 posters, contributed for 1 provisional patent application and 1 patent, participated in several financed projects both as a researcher or a team member and he has been a tutor of 6 BSc and 9 MSc and 2 PhD students. Gonçalo is a member of the EACR and ASPIC societies.
