Mário Marques Freire é professor catedrático de Informática na Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI), Covilhã, onde ingressou no outono de 1994, e é investigador sénior do Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), Laboratório Associado, onde mantém um programa de investigação ativo e financiado na área de redes e sistemas de computadores. O Doutor Mário Freire completou o ensino secundário na Escola Secundária de José Falcão em Coimbra, em 1987, concluiu a Licenciatura (5 anos) em Engenharia Eletrotécnica em 1992 e o Mestrado em Sistemas e Automação em 1994, ambos na Universidade de Coimbra. Recebeu o grau de Doutor em Engenharia Eletrotécnica pela UBI em 2000 e o título de Agregado em Informática pela UBI em 2007. Enquanto estudante de mestrado na Universidade de Coimbra, realizou um estagiário de curta duração em abril de 1993 no Centro de Investigação da Alcatel-SEL AG (atualmente Nokia Networks) em Estugarda, Alemanha. Os seus interesses de investigação centram-se na área de redes e sistemas de computadores e incluem virtualização de sistemas e redes, computação na nuvem e na periferia (cloud e edge computing), e segurança e privacidade em redes e sistemas de computadores. Nestas áreas é coautor de 7 patentes internacionais, editor de 8 livros publicados na série Lecture Notes in Computer Science da Springer e é coautor de mais de 130 artigos científicos em revistas científicas internacionais e em conferências internacionais. Leciona atualmente as unidades curriculares de Tópicos de Investigação em Engenharia Informática, Redes de Comunicação Sobrepostas e Tópicos de Virtualização e Computação em Nuvem ao Doutoramento em Engenharia Informática, e a unidade curricular de Computação na Nuvem ao Mestrado em Engenharia Informática. O Doutor Mário Freire foi Vice-Reitor da UBI para a Área de Concursos de Docentes e Atos Académicos entre 2020 e 2021, foi Presidente da Faculdade de Engenharia da UBI, durante dois mandatos, 2009-2013 e 2013-2017, tendo sido eleito para um novo mandato entre 2021-2025. Entre 2009 e 2013 foi também Diretor do Centro de Informática da UBI, atualmente designado de Serviços de Informática, que fornece serviços de computação, rede e software para todas as Faculdades e Serviços da Universidade. Foi ainda Presidente do Departamento de Informática da UBI nos mandatos de 2004-2006 e 2006-2009. É Engenheiro Informático pela Ordem dos Engenheiros, é membro do IEEE (Institute of electrical and Electronic Engineers) e da IEEE Computer Society (EUA) e é membro da Association for Computing Machinery (EUA). Na Ordem dos Engenheiros, foi vogal do Conselho Nacional do Colégio de Engenharia Informática no mandato de 2004/2007 e foi Coordenador do Colégio de Engenharia Informática na Região Centro nos mandatos de 2007/2010 e de 2010/2013. Foi ainda Chair do IEEE Computer Society Chapter - Portugal Section entre 2005 e 2009.
