Alejandro Laguna is a practitioner-researcher in the field of Psychology of Dance and Music, with a particular interest in multimodal communication and the role of non-propisitional knowledge in dance. He is a professional dancer and teacher of Argentine tango who has developed and applies teaching methodologies based on his research findings. Laguna received his PhD from the University of Évora in 2013 with the thesis: "Revision of communication problems in the context of technical dance classes from the perspective of the dance musician" (Financed by a FCT.IP mixed scholarship). He has a degree in Music Education from the University of Évora (2007), and studied Music Education and Classical Guitar at the Higher Conservatory of Music of Buenos Aires and University of La Plata (Argentina). Since 2012 he has also been engaged in intensive training in Gyrotonic System and in the fundamentals of Classical Ballet technique with Barbora HRUSKOVA, Principal Dancer and current Head Rehearser of the National Ballet Company (CNB) of Portugal. From 2015-2022 he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology - Centre of Music and Dance Studies - University of Aveiro (INET-md-UA), Portugal; and the Laboratory for the Study of Musical Experience (LEEM)- National University of La Plata, Argentina, studying "Aspects of communication in multimodal expressive performance: Crossing propositional and non-propositional contents" (financed by FCT). Laguna specializes in (i) cross and multimodal communication issues between dancers and dancers-dance musicians, (ii) practice-based research on the qualitative kinaesthetic-kinetic dynamics aspects of dance movements and (iii) non-propositional body knowledge. His studies are based on an epistemic plurality that addresses embodied dynamic cognition, 'second person reciprocal interactions, phenomenological methodologies and multimodal microanalysis based in Zero Velocity Detection. He collaborated on two competitive research projects funded by the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion, Argentina. Since 2014 he has taught in postgraduate seminars (PhD and Masters courses) at the Faculty of Human Kinetics of the University of Lisbon (FMH-UL); LEEM-FA-UNLP, Argentina; Dance Faculty of the University Autonomous of Chiapas, Mexico. He was guest lecturer at the 14th Dance Congress of Traditional Argentine Dances School (La Plata 2021) and keynote speaker at the 1st Interdisciplinary Symposium on Sciences Applied to Dance, Faculty of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires (2015). During the pandemic (2020) he created the T-Lab, a phenomenological study of corporal practice that sought to understand the (implicit knowledge) (corporal and musical gestures) of the native Tango dance. Another important activity (2021) is the “Microanalytical Analysis of Dance Movements” which is carried out in collaboration with the dance department of FMH-UL and High Performance Centre of JAMOR. In 2022 he began "A danced embrace for Fado", a collaborative artistic research-based practice —with the professional dancer, Camila Delphim— in which tango dance movements are reinterpreted in the gestural corporeality of Fado music-musicians who perform in traditional Fado houses of Lisbon. Since 2023, T-Lab has expanded to train tango dance ‘followers’ in the techniques of ‘leaders’. This initiative, ‘Ladies’, disrupts tango’s gendered roles while applying my innovative research-informed teaching methodology, which seeks to overcome a factor that hinders learning in typical tango classes, namely that outside the native context of Buenos Aires, the body receives information in a culturally decontextualized way.
