Nelson Soares is assistant professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of University of Coimbra (UC), and coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Soares obtained his PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems (SES) in the framework of the MIT-Portugal SES Program in 2015. He also holds a master's degree in Energy for Sustainability (2011) and a master's degree in Civil Engineering (2008). He is integrated researcher of LAETA-ADAI (Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transports and Aeronautics - Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics), and the Energy for Sustainability Initiative of the UC. His research covers the dynamic simulation of energy in buildings; the assessment of innovative construction technologies and materials towards a low carbon and more sustainable built environment; the study of renewable energy based technologies for the improvement of the energy performance of buildings; and the study of interrelated systems to drive the transition towards a circular economy in the construction sector. Soares participated in 5 concluded research projects. Presently, he is a researcher in the framework of the "COST Action CA21103 - Implementation of Circular Economy in the Built Environment (CircularB)". He will serve as project partner PI in the DUT international funded project “ECLECTIC - Enabling CircuLar Economy aCTIon plans for small and medium-sized Cities” (waiting contract signing). He published 27 articles in journals and presented more than 60 communications in international and national conferences. In their professional activities, Soares interacted more than 100 collaborator(s) co-authorship of scientific papers. He is currently supervising 2 PhD students and 1 MSc dissertation. He supervised 9 MSc dissertations. He served as guest editor of a special issue, and he serves as editorial board member of the journal Energy and Buildings, Elsevier, since March 2023. Soares acts as reviewer in more than 49 journals. He served as invited evaluator in 6 international evaluation funding committees. He was member of the scientific committee of 5 international conferences, and he participated in the organization of 10 scientific events. Soares has received several awards and/or honors, including the "Best Review Paper 2008-2017" award by the journal Energy and Buildings, Elsevier, in 2019.
