Luís Rato completed his Ph.D. in Biomedicine (April 2015) at the University of Beira Interior, Portugal. In 2016 he was awarded a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship (BIPD/ICI-CICS-BST-UBI) from Santander-Totta Bank/University of Beira Interior protocol. This fellowship allowed him to extend his know-how acquired during the Ph.D. on the molecular mechanisms involved in male infertility/subfertility associated with metabolic diseases. Luís Rato was included as an integrated member of CICS-UBI being part of the Biomedicinal Chemistry and Drug Research group (BCDR). Since October 2019 Luís Rato is an Invited Adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda. During his earliest research career Luís Rato has been involved as a team member of several funded projects of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, including OBESITILITY (FCT-PTDC/BIM/4712/2014) which allowed him to be part of an international network focused on obesity and metabolism. Luís Rato is enthusiastic of molecular biology and endocrinology and has demonstrated a considerable level of scientific independence. Luís Rato has collaborated with other researchers with a different background to achieve better use of resources and establish collaborations that may be useful for future research. The work produced also resulted from the collaboration with other research institutions (Unit of Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine of the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal and Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal) which highlights his skills to work as a member of a research team. His pedagogical activities include teaching: Cellular Biology and Histology, Biophysics, Analytical Biotechnology (Graduation in Medicinal Biotechnology, Polytechnic Institute of Guarda); Biochemistry/Biophysics, Physiology and Physiopathology (Graduation in Nursing, Polytechnic Institute of Guarda); Applied Cellular Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Oncobiology (Graduation in Pharmacy, Polytechnic Institute of Guarda); Genetics of Metabolic Diseases (Master Degree in Biochemistry, University of Beira Interior); Human Molecular Genetics (Master Degree in Biomedical Sciences, University of Beira Interior); Project in Biomedical Sciences (Master Degree in Biomedical Sciences, University of Beira Interior), Gastrointestinal System (Master Degree in the Medicine, University of Beira Interior). Luís Rato has also been committed in supervision and mentoring several students from Biochemical and Biomedical Sciences courses. Until now 4 MSc students (co)supervised and 1 ongoing. Luís Rato is also collaborating with several Ph.D. students from the University of Beira Interior, University of Coimbra and University of Porto, Portugal. He has participated as jury in 4 MSc and 8 BSc thesis and he is a regular reviewer of international journals, including some high rank ones (top 5%). Published 46 articles in journals. Has 12 section(s) of books. Organized 6 event(s). Has received 8 awards and/or honors, has an h-index of 24 and an accumulated impact factor of 113 with his works being cited more than 2100 times.
