Eduarda P. Martins (EM) holds a PhD in Health Sciences, completted in collaboration between ICVS/School of Medicine (University of Minho – UMinho) and Stemmatters, Biotecnologia e Medicina Regenerativa S.A (since September 2023). EM graduated in Applied Biology in 2016 (School of Sciences, UMinho) and earned her Master’s degree in Health Sciences in 2018 (School of Medicine, UMinho). During her post-graduation studies, EM received specialized training in Laboratory Animal Science, becoming accredited by the national agency Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária to work with animals for scientific purposes and to serve as a trainer for the Laboratory Animal Sciences course. Over the years, EM has developed and refined her technical expertise, with proficiency in a variety of advanced approaches: (i) cellular biology, including genetic manipulation of mammalian cells using different technologies and conducting various in vitro functional assays; (ii) molecular biology, encompassing immunohistochemistry, western blot, RNA and protein extraction and quantification, qPCR, and other techniques; (iii) animal experimentation, primarily using mouse models, including tumor implantation; (iv) bioinformatics analyses, being proficient in analyzing publicly available datasets (e.g., TCGA) and in-house databases, performing expression and survival analyses that support a data-driven approach to identifying prognostic markers and therapeutic targets, as well as conducting bulk and spatial transcriptomic analyses. While her primary research interests center on brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma, with a focus on identifying prognostic biomarkers and uncovering mechanisms of aggressiveness, EM’s broad skill set has also allowed her to make meaningful contributions to studies on other cancer types. Additionally, her expertise in in vivo techniques has further facilitated collaborations with biotechnology companies, where she applied her knowledge to test compounds in preclinical models. Throughout her career, EM has coauthored 9 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, including two as first author, with an accumulated impact factor of ~58 (average of 6.4). She has also been part of 5 funded projects/grants in the neuro-oncology field supported by a total budget exceeding €550,000. EM has actively participated in scientific dissemination, presenting at numerous meetings, with 30 posters (13 as first author) and 16 oral presentations (7 as first author). These communications were recognized with 9 communication awards, including 3 as first author: the European Association for Cancer Research Poster Prize at the 3rd Portuguese Association for Cancer Research International Congress and at the III ASPIC-ASEICA International Meeting, and best oral communication at the XIV Portuguese Association of Neuro-Oncology National Congress. EM has also been awarded a travel grant to attend the 11th Brain Tumor Meeting in Berlin (Germany, 2022) and a travel fellowship for a short-term visit to Leiden University Medical Center (The Netherlands, 2024).
