Ana C. Carvalho graduated in Applied Biology at the University of Minho in 2008, with a final project entitled “Development of molecular tools for stem cell culture” (final grade of 19 (out of 20)), and concluded a MSc in Molecular Genetics at the University of Minho in 2012, with a final thesis entitled “Temporal characterization of molecular clock genes and its importance in the embryonic stem cells differentiation potential” (final grade of 19 (out of 20)). In 2010, she was selected for a research grant integrated in the NaturAge project to evaluate the anti-aging properties of natural compounds. Then, she was awarded with a PhD Scholarship from FCT to explore whether the induction of cellular stress responses by natural/chemical compounds and plant extracts, in particular the Nrf2 signaling pathway, can afford anti-aging effects. She concluded her PhD in Molecular and Environmental Biology (specialty area Cellular Biology and Health), in 2017, with a final thesis entitled “Hormetic induction of antioxidant defenses for promotion of healthy aging” (final grade of Very Good (maximum grade)). Afterwards, she started working as a postdoctoral fellow of the Interact project, where she evaluated the anti-cancer activity of several natural compounds and plant extracts alone or in combination with relevant drugs. She moved to the ICVS/3B’s Associate Laboratory from University of Minho in 2019, with a postdoctoral fellowship under the scope of the ValorMar project, where she evaluated the biological activities of marine algae and cyanobacteria extracts, with potential to be used in the biomedical field, including in new tissue engineering and regenerative medicine approaches. More recently, she was hired as a researcher by the University of Minho and she has been working in the valorization of marine resources and development of marine inspired biomaterials. She has also been actively engaged in the management of funded projects and in the writing of project proposals for national and EU funding calls and became responsible for training several students in techniques indispensable for the study of biological activities and cell signaling pathways, including cell culture, qPCR, and western blot, and also give non-official supervision during their BSc/MSc/PhD projects. She was invited to integrate a jury of a master degree and to review papers in a Q1 journal. As a result of her research efforts, Ana C. Carvalho is the (co)author of 10 articles (most published in Q1 journals), 3 book chapters and several communications in national and international conferences.
