Manuela. E. Gomes is Associate Professor and President of the Research Institute for Biomaterials, Biodegradable and Biomimetics (I3Bs). She is member of the Board of Directors of the Associated Laboratory ICVS/3B’s. She was a founder researcher of 3B’s Research Group- UMinho, switching as researcher from the European Project Isobone (project coordinated by the company Isotis, the Netherlands, where she performed part of her Master and that was on the basis for creating the group) at the University of Porto to the University of Minho, accompanying her supervisor, Prof. Rui Reis. Manuela implemented the Quality Management System in 3B’s Research Group since its creation; she is responsible for coordinating all activities relating to the management of this system and for its certification in 2012 according to ISO 9001:2008. In this concern, an online platform was developed aiming at managing all the activities from the Group, besides several procedures that assure the functioning of equipment, laboratories, stock management, space management, integration/training of researchers and project management. She collaborates since 2004 in lecturing several courses of the Integrated Master in Biomedical Engineering, namely Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering and Stem Cells and Biocompatibility Laboratories, being responsible for these courses since 2013. Additionally, she is member of the Board of Directors of the Doctoral Program in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells; she is responsible for various courses of this Program, co-coordinator of the Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology module of the Doctoral Program in Bioengineering of MIT-Portugal. Manuela has been part of numerous European and national/regional projects as PI/member, with a focus on her involvement on preparing the proposal, negotiating the contract and implementing the European Network of Excellence EXPERTISSUES, which originated the European Institute of Excellence in Tissue Engineering (EXPERTISSUES EEIG), leaded by 3B’s. More recently, she has been involved in preparing the project proposal “THE DISCOVERIS CTR” (H2020-WIDESPREAD-01-2016-2017-Teaming, which has been approved by the European Commission and aims at implementing a new Center of Excellence in Regenerative and Precision Medicine at the University of Minho (in collaboration with the major Portuguese universities and the University College of London). Her research has always been centred in Tissue Engineering, particularly in applications for bone, cartilage and periodontal defects, including the development of scaffolds, optimization of stem cell sources e culture techniques for their differentiation (bioreactors). In recent years, she has been implementing/consolidating a research line focused on Tissue Engineering for tendon and ligament application, as well as in using magnetic materials/stimuli to promote tissue regeneration. Manuela is also interested in Regenerative Veterinary Medicine, field in which she helped founding the only Portuguese company with regenerative therapies available for application in a veterinary clinical setting – VETHERAPY – together with two PhD alumni. She is currently a scientific advisor of the company. Manuela edited 2 books, 1 encyclopaedia, and is author of 42 book chapters, 190 scientific papers in journals with international peer-review, 7 patents and over 321 communications in international conferences. Her work (in a total of 244 indexed items) has been cited more than 7369, with an h-index of 45 (Scopus). She has given invited lectures in 45 international conferences and advanced courses. In 2013, she was awarded with the prize TERMIS-EU Young Investigator Award in recognition of her scientific work in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. In 2013 she received the Career Development Award and in 2016 Career Consolidation Award, awarded by FCT. In 2017 she was awarded with a COG from the European Research Council.
