Maria de Fátima Carvalho is a microbiologist with a PhD in Biotechnology from Portuguese Catholic University. She is currently Principal Investigator at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) of the University of Porto, where she is the head of the research team Microbial Biodegradation and Bioprospecting , being also Invited Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) of the University of Porto. Her research activities are focused on the development of biotechnological strategies for the removal of emerging environmental pollutants, with a special emphasis on fluorinated compounds, and on the bioprospecting of marine Actinobacteria for the production of novel biotechnologically relevant bioactive compounds. She is author of 6 book chapters and 66 articles in indexed international journals, with an H index of 27, and has more than 200 communications (oral and poster) at international and national scientific meetings. She has participated in 28 research projects, of which 9 are ongoing. She supervised or co-supervised 12 PhD students (4 in progress) and 18 MSc students (3 in progress) and is reviewer of 24 indexed international scientific journals. She is also National delegate and substitute member of the Management Committee of EU COST Action CA18238 - European transdisciplinary networking platform for marine biotechnology (Ocean4Biotech) and external reviewer of project proposals for European Spatial Agency, French National Research Agency, Croatian Ministry of Science and Education, National Center of Science and Technology Evaluation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, National Science Centre Poland (NSC) and Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research. She actively participates in scientific dissemination activities, presenting lectures in schools and participating in scientific events aimed at the general public.
