Nazaré Couto has a PhD in Environmental Sciences and Technology from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (FCUP, 2011). Since 2011, she has been a Researcher at CENSE - Centre for Environmental and Sustainability Research, NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA; presently as a CEECIND/04210/2017), where she is also the Coordinator of the Research Area - Bioresources and Green Technologies (B&GT), since 2021. Besides daily management (logistics, laboratory, human resources), she contributes to delineating the scientific approaches for the area, including bridges with CHANGE (Associated Laboratory). Inside B&GT, she leads a team working on remediation technologies and resource recovery, supported by the international funding she independently started to acquire in 2016. She coordinated the NOVA FCT team in 2 INTERREG SUDOE projects and now coordinates ISLANDR-Information-based Strategies for LAND Remediation (GA 101112889) and TARGET-Territorial strategy for water scarcity (S1/2.5/F0041. Other proposals are under evaluation/preparation. Nazaré established a solid European and International network through cooperation within international projects and proposals submitted to H2020 and Horizon Europe calls (as a Coordinator or Core Team member). She participated in two IRSES/RISE actions and other funding mechanisms, strengthening the research international network and gaining experience applying her scientific and technical skills to new research contexts, scientific groups, and cultural and historical backgrounds. As a whole Nazaré was a visiting researcher for 20 months in total, at the University of Sapienza (IT), Lehigh University (USA), University of Málaga (SP), Arctic Technology Center (DK), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CH) and Technical University of Denmark (DK). Nazaré actively contributes to the European Union Network for the Implementation and Enforcement of Environmental Law (IMPEL), being in the core group for technical reports and coordinates the Water and Land Remediation project's national strategy/translations team. She also collaborates with FAO and the European Commission as an expert. Nazaré is deeply involved in the Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe. She integrates evaluation panels/ committees at the European/International level. She gave invited lectures at international institutions, such as Nanjing University and the Arctic Technology Course in Greenland. She is deeply involved in FORCE11 and a member of IWA, ASTM, and the National Scientific Committee of the CIPOA Conference. At an individual level, scientific employment fellowships/contracts are financed by the FCT, IP (PhD, Post-Doc, and Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus and New Generation of Polar Scientists. Her professional evolution is anchored in different levels: Hard skills, research, and technological background in remediation Technologies [Biological and Physico-Chemical] and Quality Indicators, Different contexts [Soil, Water, Oil refinery, Incinerators], Energy (Phase-out: Critical Raw Materials), Analytical monitoring. Sector experience in environmental remediation, pollution control, and circular economy (the NOVA team responsible for 3 INTERREG SUDOE and ISLANDR in the scope of Soil Missions call; developer of ten other proposals/projects), 1,06M¿ financed. The industry/international-oriented profile focuses on recovering critical raw materials from secondary sources. (a) rare earth elements recovery from coal ashes in collaboration with Lehigh University, USA; (b) phosphorus recovery from urban ashes in collaboration with Denmark Technical University, Denmark; Pollution control. (a) mining areas in collaboration with the Institute of Soil Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China; (b) oil refineries in collaboration with industry (Galp Energy Group, Portugal); (c) water/wastewater in collaboration with industry (wastewater treatment plants, SIMARSUL, Portugal).
