Sandra Mota graduated in Biomedical Biochemistry in 2006 at the Université René Descartes in Paris and completed her formation on the same university by a Master on Pharmacology and Toxicology, with a large component of oncology, under the supervision of Doctor Robert Baroukis's laboratory (INSERM U747), evaluating the effect of dioxine and alcohol on hepatocarcinoma progression. her work resulted in the publication of one original article In 2013, she obtained a PhD degree (Cellular Biology) by the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Coimbra, working on the importance of NMDA Receptors for early Alzheimer's disease progression at the Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology (CNC, University of Coimbra), under the supervision of the Doctor AC Rego. Her PhD work resulted in 5 articles, 4 of which as the first author. She obtained a post-doctoral fellowship in 2014 from the Portuguese Foundation for the Science and Technology (FCT) to work on oxidative stress-associated pathways in Alzheimer's disease under the main supervision of Doctor AC Rego. Since 2019, she is a hired researcher at the CNC under the DL57/2016 of the Portuguese law for scientific and technological employment. During 8 years after the conclusion of her PhD, Sandra Mota has evaluated the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and glutamatergic post synapse impairment as early events in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer' and Huntington's disease, resulting in the publication of 12 articles (4 as first author) and 1 book chapter. In 2021, she moved to the group Metabolism, Aging and Disease, leaded by Doctor PJ Oliveira at CNC, where she applied her know-how on mitochondrial metabolism and neuronal function to participate in several projects on oncology and neurosciences. Sandra Mota holds an H factor of 14 and more than 900 citations, published 21 peer-reviewed articles (15 original publications), 1 book chapter and more than 70 abstracts in research meetings. Sandra Mota also collaborated in the supervision of several undergraduate and master students (among them: 1 master as supervisor and 2 as co-supervisor) and co-supervised the work of 3 Ph.D. students (1 completed and 2 ongoing). Sandra has also been enrolled in several teaching activities and has also been actively engaged with the science communication office and "Ciência Viva" at the Laboratory in programs for public outreach. Sandra Mota is a reviewer for scientific journals (Neural Regeneration Research and OBM Neurobiology) and guest editor in Cells and Methods Collections at JoVE, and is a member of the Portuguese Society for Neurosciences since 2012. She is also founding member of the GreenLabCIBB initiative which promotes a sustainable research to reduce the ecological footprint. In 2019 Sandra had a career break for five months due to maternity leave.
