João Manuel Barbosa Meneses de Sequeira studied for three years at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He holds a degree in Architecture from the Technical University of Lisbon, a master's degree in urban design from ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon, and a PhD in Urbanism and Architecture from ULHT Lusófona University, which he completed in 2009. He has been a university professor since 1993, serving as an Associate Professor and Director of the Department of Architecture at the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies from 2009 until the end of 2015. He also served as an invited Professor at the University of Beira Interior UBI between 2017 and 2022. In 2022, he was appointed as a researcher for CHAIA at the University of Évora and was also hired as an assistant professor at the University of Beira Interior. He is a member of the Portuguese Association of Architects (OA - Ordem dos Arquitectos, membership number 4237) and the College of Urban Architects (CAU - Colégio dos Arquitectos Urbanistas, membership number 134). He is a researcher at the Centre for Art History and Artistic Research (CHAIA) at the University of Évora, funded by the MALAGUEIRA.PT project (PTDC / ART-DAQ / 32111/2017), and is a researcher for IN2PAST, the Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability, and Territory (an Associated Laboratory of FCT). He works within the thematic line (TL2) Landscapes, Territories, and Cultural Heritage and has been part of the Public Art Information, Research, and Intervention Network (R3iAP) since 2023. In 2012, he was a founding member of the Architecture Research European Network Association (ARENA) and was one of the main authors of the EAAE Charter on Architectural Research. As a member of ARENA, he has been involved in the research projects "Radical Architecture Practice for Sustainability (RAPS)" since 2021 and "Design Research, Series on Method" (DR_SOM) since 2013. He founded and was the scientific coordinator of the FCT-funded Architecture and Art Laboratory research centre (LabART, UID / AUR / 04494/2019) from 2008 to 2019. He has served as an expert in architecture for FCT in the development of the Portuguese architecture agenda and for the ERASMUS+ National Agency in the evaluation of several KA171 candidates. He has also been consulted as an expert in research by design by numerous international research funding agencies, including the Research Foundation - Flanders FWO (Belgium), the Technology Foundation STW (Netherlands), the Royal Danish Academy, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (KADK), and the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS). He has published numerous books, book chapters, and scientific papers and is the author of various websites. In his academic practice, he has supervised and evaluated numerous undergraduate theses, master's dissertations, and doctoral theses. He has also held and organized a range of scientific conferences and seminars, participated as a reviewer in multiple scientific committees, and taken part in numerous pedagogical and technological events and workshops. In 1992, along with Architect Luisa Paiva, he founded the AJLS (Atelier João e Luisa Sequeira) office, which was later renamed LabART - Architecture, Urbanism, and Arts Lab. The team there has developed numerous projects in Architecture, Urbanism, Design, Sculpture, and Music. He was recognized in two International Architecture Competitions, focusing on Sustainable and Emergency Architecture one from the International Union of Architects (IUA-UIA) and another from the Office of Emergency Management of New York City (OEM-NYC). Additionally, he has coordinated four national and international award competitions.
