Dr Pedro Cravinho Senior Research Fellow in Jazz Studies, Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research, UK Keeper of the Archives, Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, Birmingham City, UK Integrated Researcher, CITCEM Transdisciplinary Research Centre Culture, Space and Memory, University of Porto, Portugal. I research the development of jazz outside the US, with a particular interest in the political, cultural and social history of the twentieth-century jazz diaspora and its distinct media representation within the public sphere. Applying fieldwork research that is indebted to Anthropology and Ethnomusicology, complemented by a robust component of archival research and critical analysis from Cultural and Media Studies and Sociology, I am interested in investigating the cultural politics of jazz in distinct locations, its practices and representations within public spheres, and how the media has influenced the development of this music practice whether locally, nationally or internationally. With a music background -classically trained with a jazz education- with a BMus in Musicology, a PhD in Music -Ethnomusicology and Jazz Studies-, currently conducting a Post-Doctoral in Sociology, my investigation is focused on jazz as both a social and musical practice. My research interests span a wide range of the Humanities and Social Sciences, taking an interdisciplinary approach via the fields of Popular Music and Jazz Studies, Media and Cultural Studies, and Archives and Heritage Studies, and Sociology. I have published 10 books, chapters or articles in the last five years and delivered 20 conference papers, including a keynote. My work includes key research about the history of jazz in Portugal, published in landmark volumes such as 'The History of European Jazz: The Music, Musicians and Audience in Context' (Equinox) and 'The Oxford History of Jazz in Europe' (Oxford University Press). My chapter, "A Kind of 'in-between': Jazz and Politics in Portugal (1958-1974)" (Routledge), and the article, "Historical Overview of the Development of Jazz in Portugal, in the First Half of the Twentieth Century" (Equinox, Jazz Research Journal), are widely used in Jazz Studies programmes across the world, and I am regularly invited to give research seminar presentations in distinct European Institutions. In my capacity as BCU's Keeper of the Archives, I was invited as a consultant member to the Global Reggae Archive at the University of West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica (2019), and I support the Scottish Jazz Archive (2018-present). As a Trustee for the National Jazz Archive (UK), I was responsible for establishing the National Jazz Archive Satellite Collection at Birmingham City University. Between 2010 and 2012, I was a full-time researcher in the first jazz project funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, "Jazz Messengers: The reception of Jazz and its promoters in twenty century Portugal". I am a co-founder and Editorial Board member for Jazz-hitz, Musikene (Spain), and a reviewer for Jazz Research Journal (UK), Jazzforschung (Austria), Jazz-hitz (Spain) and Cinéma et Cie, International Film Studies Journal (Italy), and one academic publisher. My expertise as a musician, educator, and researcher and my leadership and organisational skills have been recognised in both professional roles and academic conferences. I am a co-founder of the Documenting Jazz Conferences. I was a keynote speaker for the first international conference "Jazz in Spain", Universidad de Valencia (Spain, 2013), and International Jazz Studies Symposium, Mupa Budapest (Hungary, 2019), and have been invited regularly as a guest speaker to the European Jazz Network conferences (Poland 2016, Portugal 2018, and Italy 2019). I am a co-founder and board member of the Portuguese Jazz Network (Portugal), board member of the Duke Ellington Society (UK), member of the Jazz Promotion Network (UK), and member of Birmingham Jazz (UK).
