Luís P. Fonseca is Associate Professor at the Department of Bioengineering of Instituto Superior Técnico (I.S.T.) in University of Lisbon (U.L.), and senior researcher (PI) at the BioEngineering Research Group (BERG), based in the Instituto for Bioengineering and Bioscience (iBB) at I.S.T. After graduating in Chemical Engineering in 1983, he got an MSc in Biochemical Engineering in 1989, a PhD in Biotechnology in 1995, and later his DSc in Biotechnology 2006, all degree at I.S.T. Luis P. Fonseca stayed one year (1998-1999) as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at The School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Leeds, and later (2004-2005) as Visiting Scholar at Chemical Engineering Department in University of California, Berkeley in USA. As a result of Luis P. Fonseca´s research he was advisor of 6 Post-Docs and 15 PhDs that led to publication, as author and co-author, of more than 130 papers and 8 book chapters, and one patent, and he participated or coordinated more than 20 R&D projects. Current research efforts focus in the development of nano/micro-biocatalysts (biocomposites) mostly based on hydrogels containing enzymes and/or encapsulating nano-magnetic particles function as nano/micro-reactors. The most recent area of research is on the development of drug delivery systems mainly based on lipid nanocarriers for pharmaceutical, dermatological or nutritional applications that can improve health and well-being. This area of research led to development of NanoLipCar technology for entrapment of bioactive and hydrophobic compounds, antibiotics and drugs in GRAS Liquid Lipid Nano-emulsions and Solid Lipid Nanoparticles.
