Salvatore Di Maria completed his PhD degree in medical physics (X-ray mammography) from the SienaUniversity (Italy) in 2009 with the Instituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). The objective of his PhD was tostudy the effect of quasi-monochromatic sources (Thomson sources) on the image quality and doseassessment in standard X-ray mammography. In 2009, he attended a Level II master in Nuclear and ionizingradiation technologies at IUSS of Pavia (Italy) with medical physics option. His final stage activity was carriedout at San Raffaele hospital (Milano, Italy) where he worked at the nuclear medicine department, developingand successfully testing scatter rejection techniques in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography(SPECT) used in myocardial perfusion imaging. From 2010 to 2015 S. Di Maria was a post-doc fellow at theInstituto Superior Tecnico (IST) in the framework of two projects funded by the European 7th FrameworkProgram EURATOM (where 16 Institutes are involved) in the field of application of Accelerator Driven Systemfor transmutation of highly radiotoxic and long lived radioactive waste (working on Monte Carlo simulation forneutronics and radiation shielding assessment). In one of the project, he acts as Task Leader, coordinating thework of about 10 people involved in the project and being responsible for the drafting of scientific andtechnical reports (contractual deliverables). Also, S. Di Maria was involved, as team member, in the dosimetrictasks of an FCT (Fundação para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia) funded project (started July 2012) in the area of breasttomosynthesis (project reference: PTDC/BBB-IMG/3310/2012, Title: Improvement of image quality and dosereduction in DBT using statistical image reconstruction algorithms). From 2016 until now, S. Di Maria isworking in research activities regarding medical physics area, especially in the field of micro/Nano dosimetryand radionuclide-targeted therapies, taking advantage of his wide expertise and skills in Monte Carlosimulations using state-of-the-art computer programs and tools for particle transport simulation. S. Di Maria iscurrently involved in the European EURADOS platform performing supporting studies for computationalphantoms, micro and Nano dosimetry. Specifically, an on-going activity in EURADOS platform, is focused inGold Nanoparticle research, as potential method to improve cancer therapy efficacy. The output of thiscollaboration is supported by the publications of international peer-reviewes articles (Li, W. B., Belchior, A.,Beuve, M., Chen, Y. Z., Di Maria, S. et al.,Physica Medica-European Journal of Medical Physics 69, 147-163,doi:10.1016/j.ejmp.2019.12.011). S. Di Maria has supervised 5 master degree students in the last 5 years , co-supervised 1 PhD thesis ( terminated in 2019) in the field of dosimetry and cancer risk assessment in CBCT(Thesis Title: Dosimetric assessment and risk estimation in Digital Breast Tomosynthesis and Cone-BeamComputed Tomography examinations). In 2020 S. Di Maria Co- Supervised a Master degree student ofPolitecnico di Torino in the frame of ERASMUS program, in collaboration with chemical group at C2TN (IST).From 2020 S. Di Maria participates as team member to the FCT funded project AUGERTHER (reference:PTDC/MED-QUI/1554/2020, Title: Organelle-targeted Radiocomplexes for Auger Therapy of Cancer) on cancerAuger Therapy. Currently S. Di Maria supervises a PhD student (FCT PhD grant won in 2020, reference:2020.05908.BD) in the field of radionuclide targeted therapy (inside the Engineering Technological Physicsprogram of IST) in collaboration with Nuclear Medicine departement of Fundação Champalimaud hospital, 2master-degree students in the field of medical physics and radiological protection. In 2020 Salvatore Di Mariagave Internal Dosimetry lessons (module of Radiation Protection and Shielding class) in the frame of Master´sProgramme in Engineering Physics (Instituto Superior Tecnico).
