Samuel Gonçalves graduated in 2015 in Applied Biology from the University of Minho and received a MSc in Health Sciences from the same University in 2017. Between 2018 and early 2023 he developed his PhD thesis in Health Sciences, focused on the metabolic and genetic regulation of antifungal immunity, at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) of the University of Minho in Dr. Agostinho Carvalho lab. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher contracted under the EU HDM-FUN project, in the same lab. In November 2023, he was selected as a Junior Researcher in the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus from FCT. His research activity is focused on the elucidation of the effects of interindividual genetic variation on molecular and cellular processes of immunity and inflammation, and on translating this information into personalized medical interventions for fungal disease. His track record is currently mirrored by 23 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (>400 citations and h-index=9, ISI Web of Knowledge, June 2024) and 4 book chapters. From these, 18 publications were published in the last five years, 6 of which as the first author. Selected publications include first authorship in papers published in Nat Commun 2020, mBio 2021, Microbiol Spectr 2022, besides relevant collaborations published in JACI 2017, Nat Commun 2018, Thorax 2022, Redox Biology 2022, and Lancet Respir Med 2022. He has been participating in the teams of multiple research projects on the host-fungus interaction, including past and ongoing grants funded by the EU, "la Caixa" Foundation, FCT, Gilead Sciences, and the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). He has delivered several talks at international meetings, namely the Meeting of the British Society for Medical Mycology, 9th Advances Against Aspergillosis (AAA), and the Annual Meetings of the Portuguese Society for Immunology (SPI), in which he has received relevant awards. He is currently supervising undergraduate students, namely BSc students in Applied Biology and Biochemestry and the lab rotation of MD students. He is also member of the scientific council of ICVS.
