Paula I. Moreira received her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2007. Currently, she is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Group Leader at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra (CNC-UC), Portugal. Moreira's group is interested in 1) elucidating the role of energy metabolism, with an emphasis on mitochondria (energy, homeostasis and signals) and insulin/IGF-1-mediated signaling pathways in brain changes occurring in metabolic disorders (e.g. diabetes and obesity) and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer disease; 2) clarifying the role of hypoxia and sex/gender in the neurodegenerative events that characterize these pathologies; and 3) exploring the preventive and therapeutic potential of pharmacological (e.g. mitochondrial modulators) and non-pharmacological (e.g. hypoxic (pre)conditioning) strategies. Several experimental models are used such as isolated mitochondria, in vitro and in vivo/ex vivo models of disease and human samples. Moreira has published more than 250 scientific peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters. She is also a co-editor of the book "Alzheimer's Disease: New Beginnings" (ISBN print 978-1-61499-875-4; ISBN online 978-1-61499-876-1). She is Co-Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, Associate Editor of Journal of Alzheimer's Disease Reports and Frontiers of Aging Neuroscience, Section Editor of BBA-Molecular Basis of Disease and belongs to the editorial board of Antioxidants Redox Signaling and Aging Brain, among others. Moreira won several distinctions including the Stimulus to Research prize, in 2003, supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the L'Oréal for Women in Science Award, in 2008, supported by L'Oréal Portugal/UNESCO/FCT, and, in 2023, the RFS Award in Science for Antioxidants & Redox Signaling journal, supported by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., in collaboration with the Rosalind Franklin Society. She has been recognized as a World Expert in Alzheimer's Disease and mitochondria by Expertscape, in addition to being named on the 2021 and 2022 editions of the prestigious World's Top 2% Scientists list compiled by Stanford University.
