Beatriz de P. Mariz holds a BSc in Biochemistry (finished in 2017) and an MSc in Biochemistry (finished in 2019) both from NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA. During her academic and professional path, she has enrolled in internships focused on the study of peptide and protein-based biomaterials for bioseparation and biomedical and industrial applications. Her master's dissertation focused on the development of an artificial enzyme, based on a minimalist version of a natural phosphatase, for the catalysis of industrial reactions. This project was conducted under the supervision of Doctor Ana Pina and Professor Ana Cecília Roque (Biomolecular Engineering Lab - UCIBIO, FCT NOVA) and resulted in the publication of two papers, one as the first-author, both in journals from the Royal Society of Chemistry. These experiences led her to develop competencies in the fields of supramolecular chemistry towards molecular recognition; bioseparation; protein engineering; biomaterials; and biocatalysis. Currently, Beatriz is a PhD student in the Biology Program from NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA with a PhD grant from FCT (UI/BD/151527/2021). The project is entitled "Analysis of the strategies used by bacteria to branch their peptidoglycan (PGN)" and aims to study the role of peptidoglycan branching in beta-lactams antibiotic resistance. It is conducted under the supervision of Professor Sérgio R. Filipe (Bacterial Cell Surfaces and Pathogenesis - UCIBIO, FCT NOVA) and Doctor Carla Gonçalves (The Rokas Lab | Vanderbilt University). These projects also allowed her to develop her scientific and critical thinking and self-determination skills. Besides her academic and professional life, Beatriz is an active member of the scientific community, having been involved in the organization of several conferences, workshops, and other scientific events for students. In the future, she intends to contribute to the development and dissemination of scientific knowledge by developing high-quality research that can provide a solution to the common problems of our daily lives.
