Sofia Capelo is an Assistant Professor at the University of Évora and an integrated member of the Center for Sci-Tech Research in Earth System and Energy (CREATE). She holds a PhD in Chemistry from Instituto Superior Técnico (1996), with a career spanning over 25 years dedicated to Environmental and Analytical Chemistry. Her research expertise focuses on sustainable resource management, waste treatment, and water quality. Dr. Capelo has a proven track record in technology transfer, notably as a co-author of the patent "Process for the remediation of acid waters contaminated with polluting metals" (PT103723). Currently, she participates in the research project "Phytoremediation of microplastics in treated urban wastewater: removal, dynamics and fate," addressing emerging environmental threats. Beyond her scientific output, she coordinates several Curricular Units in Environmental Chemistry and Waste Management, while maintaining a strong commitment to science outreach in the Évora region, bridging the gap between academic research, local community engagement, and circular economy principles. She was also a course director for the new degree in Ecology and Environment at the University of Évora from 2014 to 2019. This role involved: (1) creating the degree in Ecology and Environment, which was accredited by A3ES in May 2015 for six years (Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 128, 3 July 2015) without conditions and began operating in the 2016/17 academic year; and (2) preparing the course self-assessment guide in 2019. She remained deputy of the Executive and Monitoring Committee (CEA) for the degree in Ecology and Environment until 2023.
