Emanuel M. Fernandes holds a degree in MATERIALS ENGINEERING from University of Minho (UMinho), and since 2004 has been at 3B´s Research Group, UMinho. For the past years he has been working on Materials Science applied to polymer-matrix composites; materials processing and properties using melt-based technologies; reinforcement strategies; lightweight and sustainable materials. During the period 2004-2009, he also integrated the DNAPC-Department of New Applications and Products in/with Cork, of the CORTICEIRA AMORIM S.G.P.S., the world leading cork industry, coordinated by Prof. Rui Reis. In 2013, he obtained is PhD in MATERIALS ENGINEERING, UMinho, in collaboration with CORTICEIRA AMORIM, on New Functionalized Cork Plastics Composites. He was awarded with both PhD and Post-Doc GRANTS from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). As POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW, he worked on processing and characterization of bio-based polymers with cork and performed collaboration with the CORK SUPPLY industry, to work on cork composites for food contact. Since then, he is responsible for a Processing Lab and a Characterization Lab at 3B´s Group. Resulted from the excellence of his research, from 2015¿2017, he was Assistant PROFESSOR at UMinho on the Integrated Master in Biomedical Engineering and Product Design degree at IDEGUI - Design Institute (UMinho). He supervised 1 MSc student being, the work published in 2017 (Biofabrication). He LECTURED on 2018 on Product Design and was actively involved on the PREPARATION and LECTURE on the 1st e-Learning Course on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at UMinho, coordinator Prof. Rui Reis. Since 2017, he is ASSISTANT RESEARCHER at UMinho, engaging activities in industrial projects and provides support to the Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2015). He was invited to the Scientific committee and a Plenary Lecture, in the international conference (CSA2017) at Aveiro-Portugal under the Cork-Polymer Composites. He actively worked on the KrEaTive Habitat project (2017-2019) that aims to transfer Key Enabling Technologies (KET) to the Habitat market in the SUDOE space, resulting in a patent on cork composites. He supervised the work of a PhD student, work published (Mater. Sci. Eng. C). During 2019, he was award with a scholarship to participate on the Blue Bio Value business accelerator program, from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Portugal; providing contact with startups from 9 countries, acquire management and entrepreneurship skills, reinforce the knowledge on marine bioresources and blue bioeconomy. Currently, he is internal responsible for the R&D of UMinho (Co-PI) on the industrial project DIVINO (Portugal 2020) coordinated by Cork Supply, aiming to develop cork composite solutions for food contact and supervises a PhD student. He is Co-PI of a FCT project (Nature4health), a sustainable approach by using virgin coconut oil and marine origin polymer (chitosan) to develop medical devices and co-supervised a Pos-Doc. Since 12/2018, he is member of (i) Scientific Council and (ii) Unit Council of the Research Institute (I3Bs). During 2020/2023, he is GUEST EDITOR of 3 Special Issues: Lignocellulosic Materials, (Molecules), Oleogels & Organogels, (Polymers) and Eco-friendly and green composites (Molecules). His research activities include a track record with 44 international journal papers, and 16 as corresponding author, 6 patents (2 granted), 7 book chapters, 3 conference papers, more than 55 communications, resulting in a H-index 20 according to Scopus (21 in Google Scholar and received more than 2690 citations). Other activities include writing proposals to apply to National and European funding and acts as evaluator in industrial projects for ANI Agency (Portugal). He also participates regularly as reviewer in 30 international journals.
