Rui R. Costa has a background in Biomedical Engineering, having obtained a Master's degree in December 2008 and a Ph.D. degree in December 2013 from the University of Minho (Portugal), in collaboration with the University of Valladolid (Spain). In his career, Rui R. Costa (h-index=16) has published 30 documents, of which 26 are papers in international peer-reviewed journals, and 4 are book chapters, with an accumulated impact factor of 182 and over 970 citations. Of these, about 700 citations were received since 2016. He has also been a reviewer in over 20 different international journals from the most reputed publishers, including Wiley, American Chemical Society and The Royal Society of Chemistry. Rui R. Costa belongs to the 3Bs Research Group from the ICVS/3Bs Associated Laboratory, where he is a Junior Researcher with an FCT contract awarded in the CEEC 2017 applications. He has been researching biomimetic and self-organization approaches applied to natural-derived biomaterials to obtain biomedical devices with controlled physicochemical properties, multifunctionality, cellular response and drug reservoir ability. His other contributions include the development of nanostructured core/shell systems and the encapsulation of enzymes and antibiotics. His current research interests include microfluidic-assisted polyelectrolyte complexation to fabricate drug vehicles for therapeutic applications, applied to natural polysaccharides - namely glycosaminoglycans. In the last 5 years, Rui R. Costa has tutored 4 students (2 Master and 2 PhD students) and volunteered as a lecturer in several curricular courses, including in the MIT-Portugal Bioengineering Program. In 2017, Rui R. Costa was an Invited Lecturer equivalent to Assistant Professor at the Department of Polymers Engineering from the University of Minho, teaching biomaterials and processing techniques. In 2020, he was awarded a project by FCT as a Principal Investigator to develop inorganic-templated and polymeric layer-by-layer microcapsules with multimodal drug loading to treat breast cancer.
