Rui Costa has an MSc (2008) and PhD (2013) in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho (UMINHO), in collaboration with University of Valladolid (Spain). Rui Costa is an Assistant Researcher (Portuguese FCT fellowship) at 3Bs from the ICVS/3Bs Associated Lab since 2023. He has been researching biomimetic and self-organization approaches applied to natural-derived biomaterials to obtain biomedical devices with controlled physicochemical properties, multifunctionality, cellular response and drug reservoir ability. His other contributions include the development of nanostructured core/shell systems and the encapsulation of bioactive substances and living cells. Rui Costa has delivered 43 indexed publications (h-index=20, over 1700 citations, Scopus), of which 5 are book chapters. He is a reviewer in over 20 different high ranked international journals from the most reputed publishers, including Advanced Materials and Acta Biomaterialia. In 2020 his interests converged to the fabrication of gene and drug vehicles for breast cancer treatments, and the processing of natural polysaccharides (with emphasis on glycosaminoglycans) via electrostatic complexation. Under these topics, between 2020-2025 he was PI of project OncoNeoTreat (PTDC/CTM-REF/0022/2020) to develop inorganic-templated layer-by-layer microcapsules with multimodal drug loading to treat breast cancer. Rui Costa received two self-grants under the competitive Scientific Employment program of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT): Junior (Starting) Researcher fellowship (2019-2023) to develop nanostructured carriers for cancer treatments, and Assistant Researcher (2023-ongoing) under the same topic. In the last five years, he has participated in other 7 national FCT projects totaling about €1.8M and has been core member of two EU Horizon projects in health-enabling applications: APTADEGRAD (2022-2027, €600k) and ARTPLAC (2023-2027, €600k), counting with 8 academic members, 4 enterprises and 3 public bodies. Rui Costa received two IACOBUS Paper Awards (2020, 2025) which distinguishes collaborations between North Portugal and Spanish Galicia. He also received an IACOBUS Travel Award (2020) to work at University of Santiago de Compostela with Prof. Pablo Taboada on hybrid liposome/recombinant elastin nanoparticles with improved cell internalization. He was an Invited Professor at the Department of Polymers Engineering of UMINHO in 2017. His other teaching activities include volunteering to deliver lectures in the MIT-Portugal Bioengineering Program and developing content for the e-learning course on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine of UMINHO. In the last 5 years, Rui Costa has also co-supervised 1 MSc student and mentored 8 others (5 MSc and 3 PhD students).
