Dr. Mariana Carvalho concluded the masters degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2012 in the Faculty of Phamacy of University of Porto. Later, she graduated and received her PhD in 3Bs Research Group ¿ University of Minho (2016-2019). During her doctoral research she was involved in producing chemically modified dendrimer nanoparticles for theranostic applications. Other than nanoparticles, she was involved in the use of different biomaterials to modulate 3D microenvironment of colorectal cancer microfluidic models. Her work significantly contributed to the development of new tools and strategies for the investigation of cancer metastasis and is therefore vital in the war against cancer. Importantly, the quality and impact of her work is demonstrated by the significant attention her work has received from the scientific community as well as from the society, including several publications in highly prestigious journals and press releases disseminating the impact of her work to all the interested stakeholders. Overall, Dr. Mariana Carvalho published five review papers (including one in Trends in Biotechnology), five original papers (including one in Science Advances); 4 co-author papers; an international patent application; four book chapters and one journal cover. As a result, she engaged in many relevant international scientific conferences with 10 oral presentations and 10 poster presentations, being very active in engaging the public dissemination of the work. She was also the invited speaker at the Faculty of Pharmacy, UCL (UK) on a talk entitled "Tissue Engineered In Vitro Models on a Chip for Cancer Research". Moreover, she has been actively involved in mentoring students in the laboratory, as well as writing of national/international R&D funded projects, resulting in several project meetings and workshops, both in Portugal and abroad. As a young researcher, and as a result of her proficiency, her work has been cited 166 times in Scopus and 209 in Google Schoolar, with an h-index of 8.
