He is Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, Invited Adjunct Professor at Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal, and CERIS Integrated Researcher. He completed his PhD on the use of recycled aggregates derived from construction and demolition waste in the production of structural concrete. His research area focuses on concrete with recycled aggregates from different origins and made with cementitious materials from several industrial by-products. He is author of several publications concerning sustainable construction, including three Highly Cited Papers (as first author). He participated in 6 FCT Projects on concrete with recycled aggregates and on replacing cement with more sustainable binders. In 2 of these 6 Research Projects, he was the managing director of the Project. He is currently participating in another 3 Research Projects on sustainable concrete, being the Principal Investigator in one of these projects. He is also currently participating in 2 International Research Projects on sustainable construction. Productivity: 2 books, 1 book chapter; 44 papers (18 as first author; 38 in high-level International Journals; 36 in Q1 or Q2 journals in relevant categories); H-index of 20 / 22 (Scopus / Google Scholar); Total citations of 2152 / 2983 (Scopus / Google Scholar). In the last 5 years, he supervised 14 Master's theses and 3 PhD theses. He has several collaborations with different universities around the world (for example, from Spain, Italy, Brazil, and Chile). He is Guest Editor of 5 Special Issues (4 in Q1 or Q2 journals) and he is Editorial Board Member of journals Sustainability (Q1 journal), Materials (Q1 journal) and Frontiers in Built Environment (Q2 journal).
