I completed a PhD in Health Sciences - Biomedical and Biological sciences in 2007 (School of Medicine, University of Minho) on the mechanisms of protection and pathogenesis of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection. After my PhD, I moved to the Trudeau Institute (Saranac Lake, NY, USA) as a Postdoc in the Lab of Andrea M. Cooper to study the immunological mechanisms that regulate the expression and maintenance of CD4 T cells to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. I am currently Auxiliary Researcher in the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), School of Medicine, University of Minho. My research program at the ICVS aims to deepen our understanding on the mechanisms that regulate immune responses in the lung. Our overarching goal is to learn novel ways to instruct immunity to improve vaccination and develop novel immunotherapies. Throughout my scientific career, I published over 50 articles in International peer reviewed journals (h-index= 28; >2600 citations), 4 books chapters and has edited 1 book. I have also organized 4 events and supervised 3 PhD and 11 MSc dissertations. Currently I am a Principal investigator in 2 projects and a Researcher in 1 project. Given my expertise in immunology and vaccination, I have been serving as member in the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group since 2023.
