João Martins was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1967. He received the Electrical Engineer degree from Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1990, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering, from same institute, in 1996 and 2003, respectively. João Martins is currently with the NOVA School of Sciences and Technology at the NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal, where he is a Full Professor. From 1995 to 2007, he was with the Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Setúbal, Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, Portugal. From 2004 to 2009 he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Évora, Évora, Portugal. From 1990 to 1994 he was with DOMÓTICA (Study and Design of Intelligent Buildings Lda) as Project Manager and Energy Management Consultant, where he developed advanced automation systems for energy management in large intelligent buildings and industrial processes. His research interests focus on energy efficiency (renewable energies and power quality, smart and energy efficient buildings, user awareness, integration of renewable energies), electrical drives (control of electrical drives and advanced learning control techniques) for electromechanical systems, fault diagnosis and fault tolerant operation, and heritage buildings. João Martins has more than 90 publications in books / scientific journals and more than 180 articles published in peer reviewed conference proceedings. He belongs to the editorial board of several international scientific journals, such as IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine (IF8.3), Sustainable Cities and Society (IF10.6) or IET Power Electronics (IF2.1). He is mentioned in the Worlds Top 2% Scientists list (Stanford University/Scopus), has participated in several national and international projects, as member or coordinator (ERASMUS+, COST, H2020, HEurope...), and is currently with the Center for Technology and Systems (CTS), UNINOVA, Lisbon, Portugal, where he coordinates the Energy Efficiency Research Group and integrates the CTS Executive Board as Communication Director. João Martins is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), was Chair of the Technical Committee on Education in Engineering and Industrial Technologies of the Industrial Electronics Society (IES) of the IEEE (2013-2015), is the Chair of IEEE IES Technical Committee on Smart Grids (from 2022), and is Vice-Chair of IAS/IES/PES IEEE Portuguese Joint Chapter (from 2018). He is an effective member of Portuguese Engineers Association (Ordem dos Engenheiros - Portugal) and founding member of the Portuguese Society for Education in Engineering (SPEE).
