Alexandra P. Marques holds an Habilitation in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells with a specialization in Stem cells (2020), a PhD on Materials Science and Technology - Biomaterials (2004) and a BSc in Biochemistry (1997). She is a Founder and Coordinating Investigator (Equivalent to Full Professor) of the 3Bs Research Group, University of Minho, Portugal, a research unit of the I3Bs - Research Institute on Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics of which she was also vice-president (2018-2022). She is also in the Governing Board of the PT Government Associate Laboratory ICVS/3B´s. She has been actively participating in the activities (organising and scientific committees, and International Advisory Board of conferences) of different Societies including TERMIS and the European Wound Management Association (EWMA), in this first as elected member of the council and member of the scientific committee, and since 2020 member of the executive committee and elected honorary secretary. Recently she became chair of the EWMA Working Group on Translational Research that places her among key academic, clinical and industrial partners. She is currently Associate Editor of the Skin Physiology Section, Frontiers in Physiology, and was Associate Editor (2017-2020) and Assistant Editor (2009-2016) of the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. She is also Member of the editorial board and Guest/Topic editor of several journals. Her research interests focus on understanding the role of stem cells and the extracellular matrix in the mechanisms of regeneration and in the in vitro mimicry of these processes. She has been also extending her research to the development of accurate and reliable 3D skin tissue models depicting key pathophysiological markers of chronic, genetic and neoplastic skin diseases for which she was awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant. Her work has been also contributing to unravel key aspects that can be used in the development of improved therapies for chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcer (DFUs). Alexandra P. Marques edited 2 books, 1 section of an encyclopaedia, is author of 278 publications (134 peer-reviewed publications, 24 book chapters, 120 Indexed conference abstracts and proceedings), and more than 330 communications in international conferences. In addition, she is co-inventor of 11 families of patents.
