[EN] I am a research and education professional in the general discipline of Computational Biology, focusing specifically on the Population Biology of Pathogens (viruses & bacteria). My expertise is on antigenically diverse and mosquito-borne pathogens of humans and other animals. My skills are on computational and mathematical approaches that can be applied to multi-level biological data (from genes to the environment). My interests are to answer questions regarding pathogen evolution, population genetics & dynamics, epidemiology and ecology. My goal is to contribute with a combination of hypothesis-driven and data-driven research outputs towards better solutions for surveillance, control and population health. In the last 5 years I have been translating expertise into practical solutions beyond research output. I have (e.g.) developed and made freely available online, computational tools and databases related to predicting/measuring how climate dictates the epidemic activity of multiple mosquito-borne viruses across the globe (e.g. dengue, Zika, West Nile viruses). In 2021 after 12 years abroad, I returned to Portugal in search of research and education opportunities to contribute to the nationally underdeveloped discipline of Computational Biology applied to the Population Biology of Pathogens. I already have successful research outputs and projects on a few pathogens/topics of national interest (e.g. West Nile virus, Bovine tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance in farms). Given the recent urgency of the emergence of the dengue virus in Europe (Spain, France, Italy), I am now looking for funding opportunities to transfer 25 years of expertise in dengue mathematical modelling towards developing a quantitative assessment of its risk of emergence in Portugal. With the output of this assessment, I plan to inform better national surveillance, as well as to inform the first contingency plan for the emerge of dengue in Portugal.
