João Pedro Conde received his Licenciatura (BSE) in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1984. In 1986 and 1989 he received, respectively, a MA and a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University. Between 1989 and 1990 he was an IBM post-doctoral fellow at Yorktown Heights. Since 1990 he has been at the Instituto Superior Técnico, the engineering school of the University of Lisbon where he is presently a full professor and president of the Department of Bioengineering, of which he was a founding member in 2011. In 2009 he was elected corresponding-member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon and became an effective member in 2022. He is co-responsible for the Thin Film MEMS and BioMEMS research group and a director of INESC Microsystems and Nanotechnologies. His current research interests include novel thin film devices such as thin film silicon MEMS and optical sensors, integrated lab-on-chip microfluidic biosensing microsystems for applications in health, agrofood and environment, and cell-chips for biomedical applications. Recent research focus has been on thin-film silicon MEMS on ultra-thin polymer substrates; the use of nanoporous microbeads in microfluidic biosensing for increased surface density and faster molecular capture; the development of microfluidic sample preparation modules for sample-to-answer systems ; and the integration of biomolecular sensors in cell chip microsystems. He has published more than 200 papers in these subjects. He has advised more than 25 PhD theses and more than 70 masters theses. He has participated in 27 Portuguese research projects (7 as PI/coordinator) and 8 European research projects and networks. He has participated in 11 bilateral and multilateral collaborative research projects. João Pedro Conde has been a panel member of the European Research Council (2016-2023); a member of the European Science Foundation Temporary Expert Committee on Materials Science and Engineering (MatSEEC) (2009-2014); a member of the Panel for Engineering and Computer Sciences of EURYI (Young European Investigators Awards) in 2006 and 2007; was nominated by the Portuguese Science Foundation (Fundação da Ciência e Tecnologia) to the Physical Sciences and Engineering Standing Committee (PESC) of the European Science Foundation (ESF), August 98-04 (between 2001 and 2004, he was member of the PESC Core Group and PESC representative in the EURESCO Committee); was member of the board which grants Ph.D., M.S.E., Post-doctoral and Invited Scientist grants in the area of Materials Science and Engineering for the Portuguese Science Foundation (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), January 1998-May 2011 and Coordinator of the panel between June 2010 and May 2011.
