Ana Isabel Barbosa obtained her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2016, at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. During her Ph.D. she developed an affordable miniaturized point of care diagnostic device, for sensitive quantitation of protein biomarkers, combining aspects of biomaterial science, analytical chemistry with micro-engineering and biology. In 2015 she started to work in Capillary Film Technologies Ltd as a research engineer, enrolling in the product development of a novel automated fluid handling prototype for Acute Myocardial Infarction. In 2017 she joined 3B’s Research Group from the ICVS/3Bs Associated Laboratory as a Post-Doctoral Fellow working on the development of implantable biosensing devices. As a researcher, she has published 18 documents: 11 peer-reviewed journal papers, 5 papers in conference proceedings, and 2 book chapters. These documents have 253 citations since 2015. She was also responsible for teaching an experimental module in Bioanalytical Methods at Loughborough University and co-supervised 5 MSc students and 2 BSc students at the Chemical Engineer Department at Loughborough University. Moreover, she participated in several national and international research projects in Wageningen (Netherlands), Cambridge University (UK), and the International Iberian Laboratory (Portugal). As a research engineer, she was responsible for the setup and quality control of a mass-production unit of multiplex diagnostic test strips. She also participated in the design and testing of several multiplex connectors, in collaboration with Fraunhofer Institute (Germany) and Lamina Dielectrics (UK), and on de development of a quality control tool for surface functionalization reproducibility. Furthermore, she worked on the development of a novel automated fluid handling prototype acute myocardial infarction, in collaboration with Eg Technology Ltd in Cambridge (UK). Her current research interests are biomaterials engineering, point-of-care diagnostics, and implantable biosensors.
