Luisa Cortes

Luisa Cortes holds a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Coimbra and a Master¿s Degree in Biochemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. During the Master's thesis, under the supervision of Prof. Isabel Sá Correia, she studied the phosphoglucomutase enzyme that is involved in the synthesis of gellan-gum, produced by the bacterium Sphingomonas paucimobilis [Cortes L*, Videira P*, et aI. (2000) App. Environ. Microbiol. 66: 2252-2258]. Luisa Cortes did the PhD in Biochemistry, from the University of Coimbra, under the supervision of Prof. Euclides Pires, studying the involvement of pollen proteases in the initial steps of allergic response [Cortes L., et al. (2006) J. Allergy Clin Immun. 118(4):878-84]. Later she joined the laboratory of Prof. Ana Luísa Carvalho, at the CNC-Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology, as a postdoctoral fellow, studying the molecular mechanisms involved in the Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), the most common dominantly inherited ataxia and which is caused by a polyglutamine (polyQ) expansion in ataxin-3 (Atx3) [Cortes L., et al. (2009) PLoS ONE 4(6): e5834]. Presently, Luisa Cortes is a Principal Investigator and the Coordinator of the Advanced Optical Microscopy Laboratory at the University of Coimbra and the Head of the MICC - Microscopy Imaging Center of Coimbra at the CNC (since 2007). Throughout her professional career, Luísa Cortes has attracted her own funding and has collaborated in several research projects by complementing the studies with biochemical and novel imaging methodologies, that can be assessed by the publication of over 35 original papers produced in co-authorship in the last years (H index=20). Moreover, Luisa Cortes is committed to the dissemination of knowledge, through teaching and mentoring of postgraduate students and core facility staff. Luisa Cortes is the National Coordinator of the PPBI - Portuguese Platform of Bioimaging, integrated into the national Research Infrastructures roadmap, and a node of the Euro-Bioimaging ESFRI project. Luisa Cortes is the Chair of the Training working group of the international Core Technologies for Life Sciences Association (CTLS), and a lab@Location Partner from Carl Zeiss Microscopy.

The MicroDay was a national initiative, on the framework of the PPBI, and where the microscopy research infrastructures from 13 nodes of PPBI open their door to under-graduated students. At CNC it was organized by MICC-CNC and involved several researchers that helped to demonstrate the importance of different light microscopy methodologies for answering their scientific questions. 2018 - 2018	INCOMAM2018 - 52º International Congress on Microscopy and Microanalysis. INCOMAM is the annual meeting of the Portuguese Society of Microscopy (SPM). The previous year the meeting was organized in Coimbra, by the President of the Society, and I was invited to be part of the Scientific Committee. 2012 - 2012	Advanced Fluorescence Microscopy Workshop. A 'Zeiss on Your Campus' imaging workshop, sponsored by Carl Zeiss Microscopy. The workshop provided an unique opportunity not only to learn about fluorescence microscopy techniques, but also to provide answers to users of Axiovision and ZEN Imaging software. The workshop included a combination of lectures and hands-on labs, offering the opportunity to find out which imaging technique would give the best results for individual samples, and to compare the different optical sectioning techniques.
