Armando Norte's main research interests lie in cultural history (scholars, books and libraries, history of universities) and medieval imaginary, with an emphasis on the history of the body. He obtained his B.A. in History from the University of Lisbon in 2007 and completed his Ph.D. at the same institution in 2013 with a thesis entitled "Scholars and scholarly culture in Portugal in the Middle Ages," which earned him the "A. de Almeida Fernandes in Medieval History" prize in 2013. Since 2007, he has been a researcher at the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon. In 2017, he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship by FCT - National Agency for Science and Technology to pursue a project on the finances of the Portuguese university titled "Debuerit et habuerit: Heritage, income, and Expenses of the Portuguese University in the medieval and modern periods." This project was supervised by emeritus Professors Rainer C. Schwinges (University of Bern) and Maria Helena da Cruz Coelho (University of Coimbra). Subsequently, in 2020, he joined the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon as a junior researcher. Throughout his academic career, Norte has organized several scientific events and presented papers at seminars and specialized conferences, both in Portugal and abroad. He has authored numerous books, book chapters, and articles in scientific journals. Additionally, Norte has collaborated on several research projects, including "The Medieval University in Lisbon (13th-16th centuries)" and "DEGRUPE: The European Dimension of a Group of Power (13th-15th centuries)." He also served as co-PI of the project "Oeconomia Studii: Funding, Resources, and Management of the Portuguese University," funded by FCT - National Agency for Science and Technology (2016-2020). Currently, Norte is engaged in a six-year project sponsored by FCT titled "CRYPTO-BOOKS. Re-enacting the Portuguese royal libraries in the late middle-ages and early modern period" (2023-2028). Among his scholarly contributions are two reference works on culture in the Middle Ages in Portugal: "Intellectuals in Portugal in the Middle Ages" (2020), awarded by the Portuguese Academy of History, and a biography of the Portuguese philosopher and physician Pedro Hispano, who became Pope by the name João XXI (2016), which has been translated into Italian (2021). He is currently working on a book commissioned by Penguin Random House about Portuguese medieval culture. In terms of institutional positions, Norte is the sub-coordinator of the research group Cultural Encounters at the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon and a board member of SPEM-Portuguese Society of Medieval Studies and the international network Héloïse: European Network on Digital Academic History. Regarding teaching activity, over the past five years, Norte has taught several undergraduate courses on European culture, from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, as an Invited Professor at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. Additionally, he supervises ongoing master's dissertations and doctoral theses on Portuguese Medieval Culture.
