Pedro Geada (PG) holds a MSc in Biological Engineering (2012) and a PhD (MIT Portugal Program Fellowship) in Bioengineering (2018) from the University of Minho. Over the past years, he acquired technical competences and tools on microalgae cultivation and on exploring their potential applications. PG got quite experienced on characterizing and working with different types of photobioreactors and developing highly-effective downstream processing techniques. Based on his background and expertise, PG’s work is particularly devoted to growth optimization, development of innovative growth strategies, and overproduction of microalgal-derived biocompounds. Additionally, his research interests include the use of microalgae within the scope of circular economy, biorefinery, and zero-waste concepts, namely through the bioremediation of agro-industrial by-products and the development of decarbonization processes. Currently, PG is a Junior Researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) of the University of Minho and the Associate Director of the Laboratory for Microalgae Biotechnology & Bioengineering (µALGAE.Lab), coordinating the research line related to microalgae. Also, he is lecturing the curricular units Instrumental Methods and Data Analysis and Enzymatic Engineering (Bachelor of Chemical and Biological Engineering), being a member of the EU4Algae and the BioData.pt. In 2022, as a recognition of his scientific merit, PG obtained a Junior Researcher contract under FCT’s call for Individual Scientific Employment Stimulus (https://doi.org/10.54499/2022.00930.CEECIND/CP1718/CT0023). At research level, he was involved in 10 (inter)national projects – in CH4GREEN as the Principal Investigator – and a COST action, having established significant national (e.g., CIIMAR, FEUP-UP, LNEG, GreenCoLab, Universidade de Aveiro) and international (e.g., UCT Prague (Czech Republic), Universidad de Almería (Spain), University of Campinas and Universidade Estadual de Maringá (Brazil), Renewable Energy Development Center (Algeria)) collaborations. Along with the collaborations with research institutes/universities, the (inter)national projects he is currently integrating as team member (2) are allowing to work closely with several industrial entities (e.g., ALLMICROALGAE, SONAE MC, Necton, Cell4Food) as well, broadening the prospects of new valuable collaborations in a near future. Furthermore, the work developed under the scope of ZeroW project was recently highlighted by the European Commission’s Innovation Radar, which attests the quality of the research carried out by PG. PG was actively involved in the preparation of 26 (inter)national project proposals, 8 of which were funded – with a total income of approximately 2.2 M€ for the host institutions (CEB & CVR). He was also a member of the organising committee of 2 (inter)national conferences and has organised/participated in numerous outreach activities for stakeholders and the society in general. Moreover, he was awarded with 7 distinctions (e.g., 1st and 3rd places in business ideas competitions, best presentation award). Currently, he is invited reviewer of 6 scientific journals, as well as external evaluator of the Scientific Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic (MESRaSSR), the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), and the National Science Centre of Poland. The knowledge and expertise gathered throughout his professional path are reflected on 50 communications in (inter)national conferences, 4 book chapters, and 22 publications in peer-review journals. PG supervised 1 PhD, 5 MSc, and 1 BSc theses, being currently supervising 4 PhD and 4 MSc candidates. Furthermore, he was jury member of 1 PhD & 13 MSc theses in different (inter)national institutions. . In 2025, PG co-founded the PhotoUp start-up company, which is devoted to the development of bioprocesses for greenhouse gases (GHGs) mitigation and biomethane production.
