Mónica Garcia has a degree in Biology from Madeira University and a master degree in Biomedical Engineering from Faculty of Engineering of Oporto University. She obtained a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of Oporto University in 2016. In the last 5 years, she focused her research in the evaluation of biomaterials and biophotonics as a mean to enhance tissue regeneration, using in vitro cells models for bone tissue and inflammation. Until the end of the PhD, she evaluated the biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles-based surface treatments for biomaterials to enhance bone tissue regeneration. The work was performed in framework with the project “A new generation of biodegradable implants obtained from magnesium alloys functionalized by means of advanced surface treatment”; European Micro and Nano Technology Network, FP7 - ERA-MNT/0002/2009. The project was performed at the laboratory for Laboratory for Bone Metabolism and Regeneration, in FMDUP. In 2017, she received a postdoctoral fellowship from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and performed research under the Biophotonics Applied to Health Sciences Postgraduate Program at Nove de Julho University, in São Paulo, Brazil. During this period, she evaluated photobiomodulation as a tool to modulated tissue inflammation to enhanced tissue regeneration. She also worked in a project evaluating the effect of photobiomodulation in squamous cell carcinoma. Since 2019 Mónica is working in the ICVS/3Bs associated laboratory with a postdoctoral fellowship. Her current work is performed in framework of the project Algavalor: Microalgae integrated production and upvalorization of biomass and its various applications, in the subproject Microalgae in natural cosmetics. In this project she is responsible for the biocompatibility evaluation of microalgae and cyanobacteria extracts useful for cosmeceutical applications. Also, evaluating the possible claims of the extracts such as hydrating, anti-aging or UV-light protection properties. Mónica has been using different in vitro cell models to evaluate the effects of these extracts, such as keratinocytes, fibroblasts and melanocytes and ex vivo model using skin samples.
